Potentially hot take for this sicko site, but yes, the Aaron Sorkin seasons of The West Wing are good and well-written, actually. They are also some of the best TV at educating normies about everyday political issues and their tradeoffs. The seasons after he left, on the other hand...

Do some of the scandals seem quaint? And is the show aspirational about the quality of politicians? Sure do and sure is. That's good, too. We don't want a democracy to be House of Cards or VEEP and... in a shocker... people really do have sincerely held beliefs! Some even care about their country!

A few of the episodes don't hold up perfectly well because the country has changed and we've progressed on some issues, but a shocking number of them do, and the basics about the political process and committees are something far more people need to see.

Oh. Oh my sweet summer children. I am so sorry for your taste buds.

In a shocking twist, the % of income spent on housing converges on the criteria for mortgage and rental applications. News at 11.

Matt Darling@besttrousers.bsky.social

"Percent of income spent on housing" continues to be a sort of silly metric. 1.) It's almost always ~33% 2.) When it's not ~33% it's generally because of a subset of the population is not working (ie, the Florida numbers are because there are retirees without "income")

“they were always like this” yes they were but they didn’t feel like they could say it out loud at a campaign rally and it was better when they didn’t feel like they could do this

Regarding the "Anthropic posts huge loss" nonsense going around - please realize its an accounting fiction. What happened is a ton of investors converted their debt into equity stakes in the company, which had gained value due to the company's growth. Its a common startup financing vehicle.

Its also arguably a good sign in and of itself. Having a lot of your lenders decide they'd rather own part of the company that get regular interest payments is generally a good thing! Issuing new convertible notes does dilute shares, but taking to option to convert at the end of the round is good.

A tough thing in explaining to people why having children is enjoyable is that all the bad stuff is very easy to explain (lost sleep, lost time, more sickness, less sex, etc. etc.) whereas most of the really good stuff whispers.

Outstanding thread! If you actually want the detailed breakdown of Israeli elections, give it a read.

Avishay BSG (Ben-Sasson-Gordis)@avishaybsg.bsky.social

In about 24 hours, poles will open here in Israel. In what is a strong contender for Israel’s most critical elections. The election pits Netanyahu’s extremely unpopular coalition against a non-coherent, but moderately more liberal, opposition. Here are some thoughts as we head into it.

Admittedly, it iss pretty funny that "slice of above-average cheesecake" is the healthiest meal option. The sweet corn tamales are pretty good though. And somehow still 1350 calories, or, to put it another way: another slice of cheesecake.

if you didn’t want three thousand calories of pasta there were worlds available to you in which you did not order three thousand calories of pasta

Yep. Even in the best case scenario for the anti-trans bigots, you're talking about the rare highly competitive HS athlete who has *just* started T-blockers. There's maybe one or two people in the whole country where any "fairness" argument applies. The juice isn't worth the squeeze. Chill out.

I live in a rural town and, like, I don't know how to tell you this, but the girls play on the boys team and vice versa all the time because otherwise we don't have enough players for a game and it's literally always fine so stop being weirdos about kids sports and just let trans kids play.

Getting really good at throwing honor mode at the end of the Gith Creche. Last time it was screwing up the Wwargaz fight, this time it was forgetting to enter turn-based to disarm a blood of lathander trap and getting my whole party pushed off a cliff. Is this carmaker for throwing too many NPCs?

In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.

I say this with all sincerity: FUCK BOB KRAFT. The teachers at my hebrew school just staged a collective walkout of a mandatory staff meeting with a board-mandated "stop antizionism" presentation. Bob Kraft is on the board and a major donor. Proud to be the first to tell the Ed Director why.

I love Mamdani, I think Mamdani is an incredible communicator, I wish Mamdani could run for President, he has much better actual policies than Obama ever did he’s still not Obama as an orator

Mamdani?

Venting here but... I am so fed up with how much some people care about other people's shirts riding up, clothes not fitting perfectly. Sorry. I'm fat. I dress professionally, but most manufacturers do not size plus sized clothes appropriately, especially for hem vs. sleeve length.

Hey look, its my username :)

I would not have guessed the Marines would tell him to pound sand but the Air Force would not.

Ed@ed3d.net

if I were attempting to run an autocracy I think I would probably not actively seek to set up situations where my military can tell me to go pound sand

Sounds sweet and also I will both be in DC the weekend after election... and not have a single minute of free time because I am chaperoning teens 😅

ICE said Antonio Moreida jumped onto the hood of their vehicle. Now a local police investigation concludes that an ICE agent struck him with his SUV. The routine lying by ICE is the result of the example set by leadership of the Department of Homeland Security.
