this is actually pretty insane: it looks like somebody intercepted them in the supply chain and added an implant which spies on the wires leading to the screen and phones home (literally; it had a SIM card) with the secret code

admittedly it might be like 1 hop down the stack, with the face company unaware they're selling the physical rug-pulling device, but the company the contract with for manufacturing just planning to build that from the get-go.
