let me give some more info about this situation because while our features keep slipping because yall are too hot I'm pretty okay with that. in reality there are some complications that we have to get right here, and I want to explain those and then explain where we're headed

👋 We just shipped some more changes to the What's Hot feed: more nuanced filters to keep this feed "safe for work" and we're only showing top-level posts here now. As a reminder, this feed is temporary — we'll be shipping custom feeds soon for you to customize your own experience and what you see.

first of all my goal for NSFW is to give adults freedom to enjoy being adults. there are challenging questions around "and doing so safely" that are going to dog me forever, and there are way more qualified people to speak on that, but I just want to be clear what my hope is for this

second of all I gotta reiterate how the "what's hot" feed is a temporary thing that ended up being less temporary than expected, but it's going to be replaced by custom algorithms and we've started work on that officially today

right now what you're getting is kind of like reddit without subreddits, which is to say a really big part of the experience is missing

third of all, I think everybody is on the same page about wanting to have ways to self-label their posts as NSFW -- which we just haven't gotten to yet, and that's our bad. we're gonna get there

here's a (not) controversial position: the core of any fun with NSFW whether it's online or in person is consent from everybody involved and that's where we gotta get to. we're dampening some of the fun while we get those pieces in place and I'm sorry about that!

I will say a huge problem here is being able to see everyone’s replies, even if they’re to people I don’t follow. So if a friend of mine who I follow posts their dick in a thread of posting dicks, I have to see it because I follow them, even if I don’t follow anyone else in the thread. Not good!

for iOS, there's also a policy around this which we need to get in-line with -- we need to put the control for seeing NSFW behind the website; it can't be in the app we have to adhere to Apple's policies so I'm working on that update now. we have to play by their rules with the App Store

Thanks. Hoping to browse whats hot tab when I’m in public. Been away from bsky for a while for because of that, as I need to get to my private space to open the feed lol

Speaking of "subreddits" -- it would be really nice to have a mechanism(s) for intentionally shared feeds. The ability to follow hashtags that Mastodon supports feels like a possibly interesting model (though you forlks are anti-hashtag, I gather?)

Either way, I think there would be some real value in having shared feeds that one can explicitly join rather than depending on algorithmic selection. See: labels vs search in gmail, etc. People like organizing things. Let them!
