It is not “punishing” anyone to ensure equal standards of treatment. The whole point of negotiation is to ensure this but that is impossible against people who will only respond to unequivocal kindness with brutality and contempt.

That makes no sense here. You are talking about punishing people who did nothing to deserve it. I'm sorry. I just completely disagree with you. This is Trump-style vengeance you are advocating.

It’s insane to me to suggest that California and New York are the “bad guys” for demanding that they receive the same treatment from Republican leaders that Democratic leaders give Tennessee and Florida.

Literally *no one* is punished is everyone agrees to that standard. It’s revealing to me that people assume Republicans can’t agree to standards of federalism that once existed under both Bushes.

As @louisevans.bsky.social pointed out, if individual states must fend for themselves, then let’s agree to that moving forward. But maintaining the current situation and just hoping that Republicans will stop screwing Dem-run states is absurd.

I'm sorry, Stephen, but either I don't understand your argument, or we just fundamentally disagree on this tactic (I think) you're advocating. It sounds like you want the Dems, the next time they have power, esp the presidency, to fuck over the red states if they have a natural disaster or 1/2.

2/2 similar. If I'm right about that, then how is that NOT punishing the blue people in those red states? Again, I agree that we need to come up with meaningful things to do, in response to how Trump has been doing things, but I cannot accept this particular tactic of yours, as I understand it.
