I don't think I ever watched an episode of Star Trek (science fiction isn't my thing), but I thought casting a Russian while the Cold War was still raging, to make the point that humans would get along better in the future, was a lovely touch.

My armchair analysis of Supreme Court Retirement Watch is that I genuinely don't think Trump wanted or wants Alito or Thomas to retire, because Alito and Thomas are already the Trump administration's de facto representatives on the Court, and I'm not sure he could find anyone better

It’s just so appalling and enraging how casual and commonplace this has become. I’m out of words.
RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

The president is insane and should be impeached and removed. I'm done with the "very wise" Democrats/pundits who shrug and say there's no point because a dozen Republicans will defend this, no matter what. We don't even know if that's true. It's never been tested at this level.
Trump: "Let's all get behind Michele Tafoya in MN. She's running a great race. Don't allow them to play with the Votes after the race is over. The Federal Govt will be watching closely. The only way she can lose is if they cheat. We can't allow that to happen, because I won MN three times ... "
I know @atrupar.com has argued that re-electing Trump was one of the most self-destructive acts an electorate could have inflicted on itself, but this is one of those moments where I still can't believe it happened. We're likely heading for another January 6, perhaps worse.

Yeah a toddler can be away from you for a weekend but for an extended period like that it’s close family or nothing. bsky.app/profile/dmnd...
I have a new theory called the Babysitting Theory that posits that plans with friends did not go away because of phones or COVID but because babysitters are no longer a common thing

A major issue for theatre is that we lose parents for about a decade when they can't leave their kids alone to see a play. I have proposed on-site daycare options, more all ages productions, or anything to keep those people engaged. Babysitters don't exist so much as expensive sitting services.

Putting Chekov in perspective, imagine if Star Trek: Enterprise, which premiered right after 9/11, had introduced a Muslim officer in its second season. Typical with Trek of this era, Enterprise would address 9/11 only through metaphor.
In Star Trek, Chekov represented a future where the U.S. & Russia were allies (though the TOS Earth was clearly not one government, as Kirk would often mock Chekov's biased Russian history). In TNG, Worf represents a future where the Federation & Klingons are allies. It's less overtly political.
