The president of the United States, Leader of the Free World, traveled to Corinth, Mississippi, population 14,622, one week before the midterms to hold a rally in front of a bunch of empty seats and some people who look like they’d leave if some dogs were spotted humping out front. Let that sink in

4/3 P.S. I am now seeing a thumbnail image on new post notifications, which is better than nothing, but not great. Among my new post notifications are several political cartoonists, and the thumbnail is not big enough to see, so I still have to open each notification separately.

5/3 Other things that I can't see in notifications of new posts: a quoted post, the link preview if the post is linking to something external, and the image if that's all that's in the post (at least in the case of a reaction GIF).

First two paragraphs of the Executive Summary:

Like an old-time newspaper article, with all the sub-headlines. This is from the Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee. I can only hope is gets some coverage in, you know, newspapers. democrats-judiciary.house.gov/media-center...

2/3 could open that in a new tab and it was like its own mini-feed. Most importantly, I'd see the full posts from each of these people. In the new version, each such notification is its own separate entry on the Notifications page, which is bad, and what is

3/3 worse is that each shows only whatever text happens to be in that post. This means I pretty much have to open each new post notification separately. Please go back to the old way. Thanks.

Not more than vaguely familiar with Sludge, and ofc this is something I would LOVE to believe, so I'm staying a little skeptical. But assuming it's true, it is both horrifying and hilarious. h/t @edroso.bsky.social

I went over to X to see if he had any comment on this. Nope. Too busy bashing Obama at the moment. Whoops. Should have warned you to sit down first.

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

Happy Monday, everybody! This week, have you considered voting early (if you can) and voting in person (if you can)? It's fun! Try it if you can!

Trump’s 1300-word Truth Social post about Bill Maher is the kind of thing that gives a bad name to multiple-disc super-extended director’s-cut reissues of movies everybody’s already seen five times.

In this thread, he goes on to talk about how everything is great there, and all I can say is: <angry-goose.meme>Then why are you leaving after just one year?

I’ve left Anthropic after more than a year of working on Claude Code and seeing it scale larger than I ever imagined. I have really loved working at Ant and believe deeply in the mission, and most of all, the idea of a race to the top.

Just occurred to me that Anthropic is reportedly doing their IPO in a few days. I wonder if this guy was vested at all, after one year on the job. That could explain the ludicrous positivity.

"Consumer and wholesale price readings for September were firmer than expected, leaving the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge on track to show no further progress toward its 2% goal—a stall that dates to early 2025." All together now, MAGAts: #BidensFault

New in PN: Ramaswamy discovers that voters have their limits "This is the nature of today’s right-wing bubble, whose residents are not only acculturated to a particular political style — cruel, often hateful — but become convinced it’s the only effective way to do politics, & any other way is weak"

"There continues to be substantial increases in AI adoption, but it is overwhelmingly for low-cost AI." Also: using claims of "political opposition" to avoid building new data centers that they don't want to build for financial reasons. Also: Ellison in big trouble: Oracle at junk bond level.

It’s not just about who’s with you on stage. It’s about who’s with you backstage. Grateful for her love and partnership yesterday and every day…

As a measure of how sad the MAGAts are about Brazil, and how little they have to talk about here in the US, they're reaching for their old familiar binkie on Twitter. Yup, Fauci is trending, once again.

<Susan Collins voice>I think, this time, Bill Maher will learn his lesson. After at least a week of seeing Maher mentioned everywhere as tongue-bathing Trump, this is something that just got posted. (Click through for whole thing, in text.) h/t @bartenderhemry.bsky.social

Read this post if you're worried about securing the midterms from the Trump administration. I'm not saying it will end all your fears, but it will help to contextualize what's real and what's not.

Favor request For those who understand Canada's politics, please put Lorne Doerkson's victory as premier of British Columbia in context for someone from the US. Is this like winning a governorship of a large state? A Senate seat that maybe tips the balance? More significant than those? Thanks.

Just a nice pic. Something about those flowers. From the Hints page for today's NYT Spelling Bee, "Courtesy of David F. Gasser". Google AI says that are flowers from a Rainbow Eucalyptus tree, which seems correct, from a look at that page on Wkp. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eucalyp...
