full disclosure: disc was bought 2nd hand, I don’t know it’s usage/storage history Is this the first signs of disc rot on ‘newer’ consoles? White swirls on the internal layers of this wii game (PAL smash bros Brawl, nintendo published!). This could be bad for collectors 😢 cc @timeextension.com

An audio CD rather than gaming CD/DVD, here's bitrot on NIN's Downward Spiral. When it's missing the silver, it's proper (fucked) bitrot as it cannot reflect the laser back into the reader, but the staining is the first step on the journey, as oxidisation is now occurring.

That is by your definition on that LD (which is the adhesive used to bond both discs together breaking down & affecting the surrounding materials) but different again in the PDO CD example which is what is typically known as disc rot within collectors. Both are two different causes.

Typically its defined as the reflective coating breakdown down thus the disc data becomes unreadable. The adhesive discolouring the surrounding material doesn't cause it to be unreadable (yet) but will when the two sides eventually separate (Which in a LaserDisc player, is going to be scary).

PDO (UK, Blackburn) discs are infamous for it and instances date back to 1995 for manufacture but the issues only started cropping from 2000 onwards as it's an chemical reaction over time.

some of these are more an issue of initial manufacture, although its possible they could contribute to the discs degredation it really remains to be seen if they are any better or worse than any other disc.

ive a few budget dvd's, mostly horror and sci fi that have unusual swirls and patterns that seem to be between the data layer and the plastic, all of them work perfectly and even in one case buffing a damaged disc made the patterns less visible (likely from the heat of being buffed for so long)

I work at a game store and Brawl is kind of the one cursed Wii game. It might be the only dual layer Wii disc, so it is more susceptible to layer separation. We have to double test every copy that comes in. But on the whole most Wii games avoid this issue.

But if you want to verify. Rip with USB loader GX and if it fails out. It will be somewhere in the middle as it tries to switch layers. Lot of dual layer movie dvds from the era have this issue too. Bad manufacturing.

We settle on the binary of plays or doesn’t play. Usually borked discs won’t even load. We have a resurfacing machine so that handles base line read issues. And its a cheap enough game that if it has deeper issues we are happy to refund. But we can pull trashed Wii Sports out of the grave all day.
