This is not true. Every locality has a Democratic Party organization, with activities and regular meetings. You can go to them. You can participate.

There's nothing to "join" in the Democratic Party. It's a brand with products I spend my vote on once a year at the democracy store. Most people's experience of it is an endless stream of texts that read like scams, their reward for donating or signing a petition. No wonder DSA is growing

The perhaps more real thing is that DSA operates as a MUCH younger social group than the Democrats, whose meetings are often dominated by retirees

And for the ever loving love of fuck I am not caping for the Democrats simply by noting that you can go to the Democratic Party med in your town/ city/ county and take them over. My brother literally did this with a coalition he built and now they run and win as leftists

I get why it feels like this, but also, you and 3-5 neighbors could join your local (city/county) Democratic Party tomorrow and chances are they'd ASK you to run your precinct

I do think this is highly variable by location. In some places there is active resistance by existing local officials to allowing new people to participate.

and meet in the middle of the day. Like hello, I would love to attend a meeting but I have this thing called a JOB. And then they wonder why they can't get any young people.
