I highly, *highly* recommend these books, truly excellent folklore-focused romances that are so beautiful that university theses have been written on them

KJ Charles@kjcharleswriter.com

Looking for queer historical romance with sinister supernatural shenanigans? Of course you are. THE SECRET CASEBOOK OF SIMON FEXIMAL and SPECTRED ISLE are both 99p everywhere this week! (If sale isn't showing where you are give it time, includes Amazon and all the usual suspects, e only)

The lessons from Brazil and Serbia? Don't concede one inch of ground to the far right. Don't appease. Don't triangulate. Don't grovel. Don't say they have "legitimate concerns". Mobilise your base, and fight them with all the democratic means at your disposal.

We saw Eric Bauza at ComicCon on the Voice Actors panel in July, and laughed so hard we cried! Such a shining star, gone way to soon. He was one of the highlights of our 4 days in San Diego. My husband and I are heartbroken, but comforted to know that he leaves a rich legacy for the animation world.

I was there that day! Tagged him in a tweet thanking him for his support and he followed me back instantly. Dude was just a class act. Got to meet him for real a little later in the year and we nerded out over TMNT. He loved what he did and all the people that came with it. So sad, dude.

Eric Bauza wasn't just a talent voice actor and impressionist (he also did layout art, character design and rough animation from what I hear), but he was also a man who valued artistic integrity and would put his job on the line. Rest in Peace, King

Frankly seeing a voice actor do that is still so inspiring, because he was 100% risking his job over that (we voice actors are often seen as expendable/replaceable), but he did it because it was right. Man was a champion.

MirandaPitcher reposted

Just found out out I'm speechless. Bauza was the nicest guy... Never acted the big guy around crew even on the smallest productions, dude would show up at muppets just for a bootstrap pizza party, zero ego and so genuine. Didn't know him well but truly shocked to hear this

I don't care for how this has become almost a joke people throw in along with how he's old and fat and orange rather than a stomach-churning, existentially horrifying thing for a nation to know about its head of state.

I get they're inextricably intertwined but I kind of feel like leaning so much into how he was the longtime best buddy of the world's most notorious sex criminal has given it something of the feel of a political gotcha rather than the important part, which is that the president raped people.

MirandaPitcher reposted

it feels truly insane that it’s not

Andy Craig@andycraig.bsky.social

I know there's a lot going on but I feel it should probably be more of an above-the-fold story that members of Congress released a thoroughly documented report directly accusing the president of the United States of being a serial rapist.

I'm not saying it *is* incompetence and not malice, to be clear, I'm just pointing out that in this case incompetence would be nearly as bad and really just as damning. Maybe even more damning than simply being in the bag for the GOP would be.

This is one of those situations where even if you're a fan of Hanlon's Razor like I am, the innocent explanation is nearly as bad as the sinister one: maybe they're just lazy idiots who don't bother to check volunteer sources that fall in their lap and no one should read their half-assed slop.

Also, I'd love to know how two different stories -- each written by three reporters, with no overlap in the authors -- managed to find Jolene Riessen and make her the stand-in for apolitical Iowa farmers.

There are only two explanations for the NYT's habit of presenting GOP operatives and donors as true swing voters: 1. Their reporters and editors are somehow incapable of running a simple Google searches, showing just a staggering level of journalistic incompetence 2. They want to the GOP to win

As someone who was hospitalized for five days after a cold turned into an inner ear infection and caused SEVERE vertigo, you can be perfectly healthy and still have major complications from "just a cold". It's 2.5 years later and I'm STILL using a cane and doing PT in the hopes of fully recovering.

Regular reminder that when you go to things while sick, you are giving those germs to people with autoimmune disorders, you’re passing them to someone’s newborn, to someone’s elderly parents. It’s “just a cold” to you but it can and does severely impact countless people.

You can put aside socialist-leftist prescriptions about how dangerous that alliance is, if you would like. But everything I read, across the political spectrum, agrees that these countries are connected. It is just civic maturity to pay attention to Brazil's election.

MirandaPitcher reposted

I'm going to try to do this cleanly. Today's right wing governments are networked to each other. Those networks are well-documented. You can read about them in books. Following the elections in one node of that network is good practice for understanding the U.S. node.

Dan Mauler 🎃@meelar.bsky.social

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

The fact that we've agreed to call these gambling sites "prediction markets" furthers their bullshit. They predict nothing and it's a disgrace that news orgs have partnered with them and pretend they have news value. THEY'RE JUST A BUNCHA LOSERS GAMBLING.

Jenny Cohn@jennycohn.bsky.social

How pathetic. This pro-Bolsonaro Brazilian official relied on the Thiel-backed prediction market (Polymarket) to suggest that Flavio Bolsonaro had won his debate against President Lulu (who just defeated Bolsonaro in the election.) Because Polymarjet is “real” info. 🙄 1/ x.com/delegadorama...

The only reason I can think of for this news not being absolutely everywhere is that large media orgs don’t want to be seen as putting their thumbs on the scales a week before election day. And that’s cowardly as shit.

Thank you! There are flesh and blood human beings responsible for all of this, they're all somewhere on the spectrum from negligent to actual criminals, and we do have a legal system built to deal with that. We could and should strengthen it, but even what we have now would help IF WE USE IT.

I am cognizant of my fears, rather than letting them spill out as angst and then doubling down on that angst. Because of that, I am able to make thoughtful choices about how to treat people and where to put my energy. It doesn't always play out perfectly, but it's better than running on impulse.

MirandaPitcher reposted

I get it. I am worried, and I have very real fears right now. We are entering a tremendously dangerous time. The GOP will do desperate things to influence the outcomes of the midterms, and after losing races. We have every reason to be on alert. But during dangerous times, we must be thoughtful.
