There's nothing to "join" in the Democratic Party. It's a brand with products I spend my vote on once a year at the democracy store. Most people's experience of it is an endless stream of texts that read like scams, their reward for donating or signing a petition. No wonder DSA is growing

Why has DSA grown? One argument from this research: not just ideology, but organization. Strong membership plus ongoing and continuous participation in social movements creates credibility, committed volunteers, political skills, and durable electoral capacity. www.niskanencenter.org/inside-the-d...

There is (or should be) a Democratic Town Committee of volunteers engaged in various activities. There might be a ward or precinct group as well. People think that Democratic dominance in Massachusetts is some inherent state of nature. No. It is because of this very local, IRL organization.

Reward for those? No that’s your reward for registering Dem and I’m not joking. Voter registration should not be treated as signing up for spam but boy howdy is it ever

FEILD, the REPOOPLICANS once again have a DEATH LASER pointed at the Senate. Donate $2 NOW to John Someguy to send a MESSAGE to CONGRESS that we will NOT accept their DEATH LASER without a LOW-INCOME VOUCHER RIDER attached!!

When you register to vote, they have you pick a party to join. If you picked "Democrat", you joined the Democratic Party. I don't know what else you would call that 🤷

There was a time when the SPD was a huge organization. Not only a political party that ran in elections but they also ran food banks, they worked with unions, they funded schools and community halls and such. Now, they're a brand you spend your vote on.

The average voter has the same relationship to their party as they do to McDonald's. Without any way of actually breaking into the deliberative process, your only recourse is voting with your wallet and if you're a REAL crank then you try to annoy someone multiple tax brackets above you

I lived in Atlanta for 30 years, until 2025. As it purpled from 2016 to electing Ossoff and Warnock in 2021, it kinda felt like everyone was door knocking, text banking, writing post cards, etc. Everyone doing their bit. It was joyful and powerful and it worked.

I think the big litmus test for me is that in the DSA you don't go dormant outside of election season. They're constantly debating, making resolutions, planning for the next season, and pushing for local activism. This has never been my experience with the local democrats.

I think DSA is a welcome and important development, and as you say, Dems in a lot of places have left a lot of gaps that can be filled in by people with the energy and enthusiasm to do so. I assume the alleged “freak out” by “moderates” is actually just donors whining to electeds and journos.

I have never donated to them. They have tons of money why would I? I vote Democrat because it's not Republican. Blegh. I'm whatever is on the working peoples actual side

Yeah I don't know if this is an Ohio thing? But every text I get is some variation on "I can't BELIEVE nobody cares about me! Our support is cratering, and we don't have any money at ALL! Won't you give $100 to our failed, dying cause?"

Is that why there are so many self-declared democratic socialists who think that it's a capitalist ideology? Because they signed up for the well organized club and never bothered to pay attention to how the DSA itself described democratic socialism? (Spoiler, they say it's socialism.)

there are local Democratic party committees across the country that many activists join and work hard to sustain. who do you think does the work of finding candidates for local offices? who do you think gets them on the ballot? who do you think staffs campaign hqs and hands out literature and

Really? I’d have sworn we have local and regional structures and people who you can meet at public events and such. I mean I’m not a member, but I know who the people are in my city. That’s such an odd argument? Are you actually involved in the political process or just a keyboard pundit?

I watched the Tea Party slowly turn the republicans from stodgy Romneys to frothing zealots and they’re saying we SHOULDNT do that for the left?

It’s “growing” by using the money and resources of the Democratic Party. Why don’t you break away entirely instead of sucking off the tit and complaining that the milk isn’t sweet enough.

The Democratic Party abandoned FDRism that said our government creates our national currency when Congress votes to pay for something & should pay for our General Welfare rather than corporate & bank subsidies Democracy requires Public Law and a Public Money that’s used to create democracy

Fascists understand that the state creates the currency, which is why they’ve seized our money creating powers. All Dems can do is yell at the sky and demand Musk create our currency when he pays tax It’s so very sad

I don’t have a lot of extra $$$ but i do have time, so every cycle i try to find out how to sign up to knock on doors or drive people to the polls or something. but every D website treats volunteering as an afterthought, it’s just money, money, money, how much do you want to give us

In my experience, it's often better to volunteer directly with a candidate for door knocking or phone banking. The more local, the better, or the race you care most about in your region.

People like you are why we're in this predicament. You think like consumers, not citizens. You only care about how you look, not what's good for anybody else in the world. You are a narcissistic prig who is destroying America.

You can join the party. You town or neighborhood will have a Democratic committee. These people are how the Democratic Party functions on a local level. They are the ones organizing things like school board campaigns and door-knocking outside presidential years. They also do community works.

I tried. One of the first things they did was ask for the “membership fee,” which was steep. That ended my attempt to join my local Democratic committee.

the last major grassroots organizing that took place wholly within the confines of the democratic party structure was the Uncommitted movement, who are being branded with racist dog whistles to this day in places like michigan

There are also Democratic clubs people can join. They represent a local neighborhood or an affinity group and allow people get more involved in their local party. It's also a good way to meet local candidates since they'll often make the rounds to every club in their district during a campaign.

Yet they are winning Democratic primaries because Democrats welcome them not Republicans. Here in Maryland we have a very active, progressive Democratic party. Look at Raskin's Democracy Summer.

In 2012 I was getting daily calls from local Democrats asking if I had voted yet and not happy I'm waiting for election day. I finally said "yes I'm planning to vote for Obama, but if you don't stop calling me I'm considering NOT voting for him." I wasn't actually, but the calls stopped.

What's infuriating is that the DNC could replicate DSA's organizing strategies, but they refuse to. If you try to volunteer, you just get told to send money, or maybe phone bank/neighborhood walk at election time. Establishment Dems would rather just yell at the DSA then build their own coalition.

What's most important is maintaining momentum outside of elections. The DSA always has some bullshit going on. Protests, food banks, brakelight clinics, you name it and your local chapter has probably done it. The local level Democratic parties on the other hand? Eh. Ask us next midterm.

Yes, momentum and also campaigning/advertising wins. If lots of people don't know that Obamacare = ACA = Democrats, then something is wrong with the way Dems advertise our wins to the general population.

well something is also wrong with the fact that by and large the ACA is one of the 3 most recent wins the dems even have to advertise. ACA, build back better, and then you gotta go ALL the way back to kennedy to find anything of note. 2 wins in 60 years. thats a NY knicks win record your talking.

I do not like labels, but this DSA is doing the will of the people. Fancy that energy is going into benefitting the employers. DNC...you had better wake up and forget about your owners...err...donors. Trust me, the first sign they're not getting what they're paying for that money will disappear.

That has not been my experience at the county level. I’m a precinct chair and committee member in our County party. However it’s run by retirees on a very rigid structure. DSA isn’t, which appeals to younger people and/or those who would prefer more informal structures. Many of us work for both.

Every Democratic Party voter and member is ALREADY appreciative of socialist programs, like the fire department in their town, or healthcare everywhere, or national parks, or ... the list is endless. Make DSA the new DNC! We have only to acknowledge the simplicity of the public good to get there!!

There are places to socially participate in the party, beyond checking D on your registration and getting emails - local county, city or town party committees and campaigns. Many of those are looking for more or new people with visions for the future. My own committee has 100 of 280 seats filled.

I think what's happening in these replies just highlights how different the Democratic Party is in each state Some states and communities have robust parties doing everything the DSA is doing Some places, especially the big blue cities like NYC, are the old fashioned big money country club machine

The experience of local parties does vary pretty tremendously, and it can change a lot within a given community depending on who shows up and wins leadership elections. Some local parties are inactive or dominated by country club conservatives but it’s important to see what you can do.

As someone who previous ran mobilisation for a campaign, no, it's an issue for your party if there are interested people who would like to be more involved and you aren't making it an easy and good experience for them to get more involved.

MAGA torched the dems in terms of organization. They found the terrorist handbook in the middle east after 9/11 and said, hey we can do this too! Dems have been unorganized and foolish since. Their aristocrats need to wake up and listen to the peopl

Governments create the national currency Banks create loans Everything gets paid for either by government spending or bank lending You’ve been brainwashed to think you can only be free if you have to suck the dick of a bank CEO just to give your child some medical care

I feel like half my political advocacy is "please, for the love of god, treat politics like making a purchase at the democracy store and stop trying to get identity or community or belonging out of it."

I’ve been a Democrat all my life. Democrats have been responsible for every good thing in government, and many bad things too. Republicans have been responsible for almost every bad thing and a couple of good things I don’t know WTF you’re taking about, but Democratic socialism is liberalism

The ceaseless begging is a massive turnoff. And in some cases, very little of the money raised goes to candidates. I suppose it happens on the Republican side too.

Checked and this is not on the main page. Instead there is a summary of thier beliefs. The issue is not with asking donations but the fact that it is entirely what the dems ask of you.

They can waive the dues if you can't afford it. Also a lot of the more general meetings and events are free to attend

You know we can see the "Income Based Dues" option, right? And we can see the URL of the website? And going to said URL and selecting that option allows for paying as little as "1% of monthly income?" That's a hell of a lot lower than *anything* I get asked to donate to Democrats 15+ times a day.

When you go to a website to find information and instead you get hit with a big splash page seeking your money, that appears as a paywall. It is a known factor of web design that many people will simply leave the page rather than figure out how to get past the splash intro.

I stopped donating to Democrats like fifteen years ago because of the endless sales and resales of my contact info. Even now I still have new pleas for funding pop up even after I thought I’d sent them all to spam. If I didn’t get those, I’d probably have donated maybe 20 times in the past decade.

You can choose to be a consumer but you’re more impactful as a citizen. There are four different protest groups in my city of 25,000, not counting the local Dems. Participate and shape events or spend a vote occasionally.

l go out and canvas for local candidates every election. It’s mostly old ladies. No one invites us, we just do it. The most important political office is citizen. Just get involved whether it’s with the DSA because that’s a cool, young brand or join the old normie dems. Let’s all work together.
