Correct. There’s no math that shows we can cut our way to a balanced budget. And it’s doubtful anyone wants to simply raise taxes to align with current spending. If we had a functioning government, we could get together and make relatively modest adjustments on both ends to get us back on track.

I can live with that. And hell, yes they lived pretty well on it too ! There are people who would pay any tax to live here. It’s the financially successful who don’t see it that way.

Why the fuck do we need to spend so much on defense? We have the largest military in the world. We can cut $50B from that and we STILL spend the most on military. THAT'S THE WASTE AND ABUSE THAT NEEDS TO BE CUT!!!

And you won’t be needed, now. No one really trusts that Trump won’t lie and renege. Or Elon won’t disable functionality. Cannot be trusting the Trump Tyranny. You should be able to cut plenty.

My husband lived long enough to collect five years of Social Security when he paid into it from 16 till he retired at 65. And employers matched every penny. It’s not an entitlement it is earned retirement. Please don’t use that Republican word entitlement.

It is not an effing "entitlement" when the government withheld it from my paycheck..and, when my employer matched it...because the government promised it was in a trust so I could retire with an income. Period. If they don't want to provide the retirement they promised i want all the money back 🧵

With interest. I should have known "the greatest country on earth" was going to rob my pay and break their promise. Entitlement my hiney. Give me my money back, then.

Therein lies the problem and situation we find ourselves in. Everyone has high expectations for Ds to get things done - and perfectly- (see Obama) and none for Rs. No one rises to the occasion when there are no expectations to meet. So Rs get a pass every time with no accountability whatsoever.

Scott, I expect more. The idea that "deficit bad" is antiquated and lacks any nuance whatsoever. And, I'll bet you'll agree some deficit is good, as much borrowing to fuel growth is...and given our favorable terms for "borrowing" it gives us a global advantage.

And since my employer's contribution was factored into my salary, I count all of it -- not to mention the earning potential of that money if I'd had control of it throughout my life.

Like that this is not a mouth breather but ENTITLEMENT is a lie. Entitlement is incorrect stop saying it. Stop it!!!!!! It’s like saying I eat boogers it’s a stop listening to me trigger. I’m an idiot trigger. Stop using the word entitlement. Otherwise you aren’t capable of identifying adults.

To be pedantic, entitlement and earned benefit are compatible. It's more the negative connotation. But I'm tired of coming up with new terms just because a word acquired a negative connotation. E.g. homeless / unhoused.

Democrats need to be the adult in the room and tax billionaires out of existence. Until that happens, we the people will not tolerate cuts to our safety nets. The rage is brewing and when the Recession hits, things are going to get ugly fast.

And maybe the democrats need to throw tantrums like toddlers, fold their arms and fucking refuse to bail the Magats out, AND let them drown in the shit they spilled everywhere? Because nobody seems to expect this actual real life GOVERNMENT to be fucking adults in any room now.

I’m not trying to be “that guy”, but this is up to parents. The Nazi party has been influential in school boards and parents groups. It’s going to be even more difficult for teachers to teach.

Absolutely. Let's do this. But the current administration is beholden to too many special interests, not the least of which is billionaires. We can stop buying trillion dollars stealth bombers, too.

We need to treat federal debt with the same discipline we demand in serious debate: force truth into the open. Make politicians admit when they choose fantasy over math. Dodging hard choices today bankrupts the future. Don’t let them pretend otherwise.

The US spends a lot of money - but tax in/gov spend' doesn't capture exactly what is going on. The US has obligations - to its citizens, to its creditors(mostly citizens) and to its allies. If enough obligations cannot be met, the US ceases to exist as a country. This is the big risk.

Fixing things means identifying places where it makes sense to 'just pay cash', places where it makes sense to hire someone to do the task, or places where those obligations must be returned to citizens because the government has failed. Just doing the latter is government collapse.

The other half of this is 'income'. The US tends to spend money on things that generate it a lot of taxable money in the future. This makes loans super cheap because the US is a good investment compared to the market (Stability vs payout wise)

I believe the Bond market has cratered. I’m afraid the USA is no longer considered a stable investment. I don’t think Trump realizes what he’s done. He will, though. He will.

For example every dollar spent on education works out to something like $7 in future taxes, adjusted for inflation. Programs to combat malnutrition pay out at something like a $15/1. Preventitive medicine sometimes gets to $100/1 . 'Entitlements' fall into this category almost perfectly.
