There's no such thing as toxic masculinity — that’s the emperor of all oxymorons. There’s cruelty, criminality, bullying, predation, and abuse of power. If you’re guilty of any of these things, or conflate being male with coarseness and savagery, you’re not masculine; you’re anti-masculine.

wfmd.comI’ve been a pastor for 40 years. Young men are struggling and I think I know whyTraditional male formation systems collapsed, leaving young men vulnerable to radicalization and mental health struggles to help cope with loneliness.

I agree. I've heard people on the left use this term and it does a disservice to men and that's one reason why some men find more comfort in the republican party. People shouldn't try to attribute masculinity with being an asshole.

The key word is "toxic", not "masculinity". It's a different category of masculinity that uses so- called "traditionally masculine" behaviors to explain their assholery. Toxic is asshole, Masculine isn't. We also have toxic femininity, but i guess guys don't talk about that much.

I think we might agree here, but can't tell. You can call it toxic, just ascribing it with masculinity makes it sound like masculinity is bad.

Like anything, it's a continuum: too much can be poisonous; a few drops of bleach makes water safe to drink, but if you drink a glass of bleach, you'll be pretty sick. Exaggerated masculine traits and behaviors are toxic, not actually masculine. In fact, they're evidence of weakness and dysfunction.

Please, stop asking us to give a damn about men. They laughed in our faces and mocked women. As the flipped us off and intenronally voted against us 11/24. The only thing young men, especially, need to do is. QUIT BEING ENTITLED ASSHOLES

This is correct. The idea behind the term isn't that masculine = toxic. The point is that there is a *type* of masculinity that is harmful, not only to the targets of the associated behaviors but also to the males themselves who ascribe to it.

Of COURSE there is a non-toxic masculinity. The problem is that some guys are encouraged to hear the term "toxic masculinity" and reinterpret that as though the speaker is referring to all men. Then those guys get defensive and resentful. Some folks prey on that resentment for culture war reasons.

A lot of the friction comes from mistakenly thinking the opposite of being a man is being a woman. In reality, when an adult male is isn’t being “a man” it is more precise to say that he is being a child It’s about demonstrating to boys that the real qualities of manhood are attractive and worth it

Some times labels are helpful. Sometimes they're not. Here I think it produces an umbrella term that anyone can use, misuse or abuse as on a term hardly anyone understands but is full of power words that many can and will seize upon for whatever their agenda is.

If you stopped trying to valorize what should be a neutral adjective, you’d have more time to opine and educate on things that you are good and/or great at.

I don't know if everyone would agree that feminine or masculine could—or should—be neutral adjectives. I know that a lot of people find incredible meaning and importance in those adjectives, that they informs peoples' senses of identity, and that for better or worse they seem quite charged as it is

With bullies around every corner, I agree 100%. “99 times out of 100, the answer will not be violence. It will be avoidance or de-escalation. But that one time when violence is the answer, make no mistake, it will be the only answer.” ― Tim Larkin, author, When Vilence Is The Answer.

I love that Prof. Galloway pares issues down to simple basic sense. The word *masculinity* has nothing to do with toxicity, and should NOT be related never mind equated.

Jesus. You lost me there. My behaviour is masculine by definition, but I can guarantee you that much of the insensitive and aggressive urges I find myself dealing with is due to being male with testosterone. Eg Hegseth. Women can have toxic femininity?
