Public education is America’s superpower. UC gave me mine—this isn’t lost on me. My aim/mission will be simple: accessibility. 🇺🇸📚💪

Congrats to @profgalloway.com on joining the UC Board of Regents. "Public education is America's superpower," with accessibility as the mission, is exactly the lens a governing board needs. As a Cal State professor, I just wish he, or others like him, sat on our CSU Board of Trustees too.

if you have any sway with the state unis, please help with those. SFSU has become a diploma mill turning out 1000s of under-equipped grads that should have been graded out and given trade training and/or alternatives. It *should* be one of the highest tier state universities in the country

Congrats. As an alumnus of UCI, and with a son who also graduated from UCI 3 years ago, the issue facing students is housing. None of the campuses can guarantee housing for students beyond 1 or 2 years and most all are in very high cost housing areas: La Jolla, Irvine, West LA, Santa Barbara, etc.

And are landlocked. Expanding seats really isn’t an option; they can’t take care of students they already have. UC has a couple campuses (Riverside and Merced) which could expand but are seen as second rate; and could easily create 3-4 new campuses to meet demand, but where to put them?

We have similar backgrounds (up to a point). I would never be admitted to UCLA now, but have benefitted from my undergrad degree immensely. I hear your plea and agree - open up admissions! 5% acceptance rate is way too low.

There is already way, way too many students at the likes of UCLA or UC Berkeley. Kids are literally stacked like submariners, 4 to a tiny room. We need more, smaller schools, not more students at existing ones.

Or….we could just build new colleges that are smaller? What is the benefit to a 50k+ student college that couldn’t be accomplished by 10 5k student colleges with better services and smaller class sizes?

Excellent and congratulations! UC and the California Community College system are excellent in many ways but there’s still need for disruption to address the times.

High priority should be decreasing the cost of tuition at state schools and increasing their size. Corrected for inflation, in-state tuition at the University of Illinois doubled since I went there in the 1970’s.

It would be helpful to have a program like they do in France ‘formation en alternance’. It is to a system where students alternate between classroom learning and paid work at a company, often over a multi-year contract. It’s roughly the same as an apprenticeship program in the U.S.

Congrats Scott. You are living proof in the value of the UC system. Access is a great objective. My father was part of an early wave of public school full ride scholarship students to go to Williams. It changed his life. UC can have the same effect for others with the right support.
