My daughter did a 9 month volunteer youth program in Canada called Katimavik..volunteering (civil service) in 3 communities across Canada with a cohort of 9 other 18 and 19 year olds. She loved living with with a peer group and working on community projects, and found her direction in life.
No.
You aren't going to create faith in our nation with a military that treats its members as a disposable resource (stop-loss) and fails to fulfill its promises (VA administration failures).
You want youth to have faith in America? Work towards an America that displays it is worthy of it.
I used to love this idea, but we all know the children of the elite are not going to do “mandatory” service. Rich people’s kids will be able to get a leg up on their careers with much less competition, while everybody else becomes serfs. The caste system will be in place in record time. No thanks.
OK.
It's a nice idea, but
-You don't have the kid population to mass mobilize & have a zero sum system in which they can't afford to piss away 3 or 4 summers on providing non-career oriented free or discounted labor while rich brats cruise into legacy college slots ahead of them.
Restore faith on our country? Such pie in the sky idealism when "our" country is starving segments of our population and poisoning the rest. So go do service when ur hungry and fighting polio, blind from measles. This would be fixed if we got rid of social media. The rich in this country want.. 1/2
Two classes. Rich and poor. The owners and their servants. While the rest of us do our service the rich just want more power and control. There are millions of people that give service everyday. Now! That service is trying to save the people that our Republican govt wants to throw away. What BS
F’N stupid! Every rich kid will get away from doing anything meaningful or useful for the country while the poor pay the price.
You want them to have faith? Make corporations and the greedy rich accountable. Afford them a decent life. While you are at it, house and feed homeless veterans. 🤬
I worked in the YCCIP in high school in the late 70s. Basically doing work the janitors wouldn't do. They paid us a little money. Reagan shut it down. It gave me a taste of making money. Great idea to bring something like that back.
We live in a country where the “ elected” president of the United States is a known five time draft dodger. Does anyone think this “mandatory service” would be any different. The wealthy would find ways to avoid it or to maneuver themselves into the best positions.
Thank you. I’ve been saying this for years. You can be in the military. You can work in a national park. You can build houses for the homeless. Lots of good opportunities. But everybody should be doing something for the country.
(And they all get VA healthcare for life.)
Ideally it's a good idea. In reality, it's just another system that will get corrupted by the rich and well-connected. Think the military draft. Then we'll have a new status system created that mucks up our society.
Cynical, I know, but that's an observation based on experience.
I love this idea, too. And also because, and this is a bit more out there, but it seems to me that if you expose more people to how fulfilling it is to do service work, they'll be more open to it as we move into a AI/UBI-based economy.
