I think there are many problems in media that can be traced back to a death or drought of sincerity in mass media, a fear of discussing love or solidarity, or unabashedly loving your friends. It’s “vulnerable” if you talk about feeling bad or sad. Doesn’t feel vulnerable to me, I feel stronger now

I mean you’re completely right though. Cynicism has cultural cachet right now, while earnestness reads cringe. But earnestness is where real power is. Cynicism is a limiting worldview. It necessitates detachment and ignorance. Real ones know to let things in, to take joy, and to embrace learning.

It always seems wild to me that “don’t worry what others think of you, just enjoy life” is a truly enlightened position

Because it’s so hard to do, I think, as a result of an individualistic culture and the inherent competition in most things. If you have to do better than everyone else and stand out, then that means you have to constantly think about external opinions of everything you do

This also applies to any context involving other people, especially being in the car. There is absolutely no reason to get mad at the person in front of you for going too slow or the person behind for tailing. Get yourself out of the way, move on, and try to empathize with their clearly bad day

Whole family is in the car, in Florida. I'm driving. Someone cuts me off. My wife goes, "can you believe they did that". I laugh, ask my 16 year old in the back seat, "should I be surprised by that?" She replies, "Nope" I've driven in FL in 4 decades, I know how to avoid & just let them go.
