Yeah like what’s the game even about? Oh yeah, same game that collaborated with two transphobes who were exposed in the files and laid off 1000 employees including one who’s suffering from terminal brain cancer btw.

Companies have been obsessed for years with the idea of one big live-service game that can be their movie tie-in game without them actually having to make one Lego thought they had one with Dimensions. Marvel is trying to do it with Rivals Fortnite is just the tie-in dumping ground for *everyone*

I wouldn't put it past Epic to have just automated the skins now. Once an IP reaches a certain box office / cultural zeitgeist, an AI poops out a model from it into the game

It's essentially the last RPO metaverse experiment standing... largely due to its metaverse being a pivot coasting off of the success of being a PUBG clone... which itself was a pivot from its initial attempt at being a Minecraft clone...

My best guess is, it's the most mid shooter ever but it's a thing that gave children and teens a shared experience to interact in now that most of the outside world has banned them from congregating without being harassed. Also Epic games sucks ass.

fortnite was a zombie survival shooter that flopped that they managed to parlay into a ridiculously successful PvP battle royale. many games do crossover marketing, so they added licensed characters. that eventually turned it into a platform for any media and crosspromotional stunt, no matter what

I've been calling it "Funko Pop: The Video Game" for a while now, since that's all it's become. Who cares the context, so long as we shove as many brands in there as possible? It's content slop, which is pretty accurate seeing how this is Epic "All Al, all the time" Games we're talking about.

It's just a free shooter game, with other mechanics and minigames sometimes, with loads of other ip skins you can buy that boil down to, "look, it's the guy from _____!" There's no point for the consumer other than to play with friends, and for the publisher to continuously make money.

Smashing action figures together at least involves some imagination by the person doing it (7 year old me had LORE about why Grimlock was fighting Shredder). Fortnite is like watching someone else smash your action figures together while occasionally yelling the n-word in Optimus Prime's voice.

I watched a twitch streamer play Fortnite once; he was playing Optimus Prime with a new voice mod and was having fun. Then came a bunch of other people also playing Optimus and using the voice mod to record themselves bellowing slurs in Peter Cullen's voice. First time I saw a streamer's soul die.

"Oh hey let's take that girl who was essentially raped by magic in a disturbing as fuck movie and give her a sniper rifle and drop her out of a bus held aloft by balloons" what in the entire fuck happened to your brain

Sometimes I think there are people who just react to media like those weird deep-sea creatures react to light, involuntary reflex actions in response to things they could never understand.

When the Droogs were in the background of Space Jam 2 was the moment I was fully radicalized against crossovers. No themes, no message, nothing to say beyond "Look! A Thing!"

I gave Ready Player One a pass for doing this because it was happening in universe, but people seem to have taken the lesson as 'jingle the keys, these fucker love it!' So I retroactive blame Ready Player One for this too.

I mean, both the book and the movie, kinda already were doing that. Certainly they never struck me as a sincere critique of dystopic capitalism infecting beloved entertainment properties and characters.

I whaled for the LittleBigPlanet franchise, (which was DLC genre mixed) and I genuinely enjoy FunkoPops. I don't remember Sackboy or a plastic golden Cthulhu ever having to use "I don't consent" as a battle cry.

Look, it's a cavalcade of famous movie monster - haemovoric Wallachian aristocrat, dog guy, cannibal psychologist, Texan (with chainsaw), woman who pouts weird after local dipshit curses her

It used to be about buying & trading exclusive skins at a certain point it became about just smashing random action figures together, yes. I mean I get this tied to a Halloween event but if they really wanted a spooky skin from Obsession it should be Bear with a One wish willow...

There was a certain charm to how Nintendo smashed all the video game icons together. When EVERYONE started doing it, it lost all that charm... and I got sick of it entirely. I really don't want to see Jason fighting Bugs Bunny, or all this random stuff in a game that used to have an identity.

Fortnite isn’t terribly creative, but it does know that having the current trendy thing/character/meme on its game store equals money. It literally could be anything, if it’s popular enough to be sold, Fortnite will get in on it. That’s it, that’s the point.

I remember people made fun of Endgame for predicting that this game would still be around in 2023 when the movie was released in 2019. Ironically, the writers seem to have sold themselves short on that one...for better or worse.

It´s exactly that. The guy in charge of the game named Ready Player One as the aspirational model. Also it helps that crossovers allow everything to be an ad for everything else.

People like smashing their virtual action figures together until they are reminded these were once characters with meaning, then the next popular character from a "lesser" thing is added again and all is right in the world.

Yes. They abandoned any semblance of a 'story' long ago, when the 'dancing' became a viral thing. I watched 2 things. That black hole thing at chapter 2, and the end of chapter 6 big battle. I can not make heads or tails of the game or gameplay. (Knorr want to)
