I can still not write or manipulate Arabic without issues in a tremendous amount of common software.

I'm working on a column about the tech annoyances that drive us crazy, and I want it to be as universal as possible, so tell me yours! E.g. scanning a QR code to read a menu, never receiving the one-time passcode they supposedly texted you, "verify you're human" by IDing tiny motorcycles, etc.

Is there any software you're aware of developed by Arabic-speaking developers we could be supporting (either financially by buying/using it, or socially by talking about it)?

Is Arabic writing more complicated than a straight line of letters? I ask because Korean writing is more complicated than that, and thus computers need to do tricky things to handle Korean writing.

Text goes right to left (a lot of software assumes left to right), characters change shape depending on the surrounding ones. Relatively easy at least for basic text (there are some scripts that are much worse about this), but it needs to be explicitly supported or it'll render wrong.

Korean is actually easier because Unicode has codepoints for every possible combination for Hangul and fonts just use that lol If you want to be clever you *can* try to exploit composing characters on the fly though (and save memory). At least it's feasible with Hangul, much harder with e.g. kanji.

The context sensitivity (ie. what appears when you type a letter depends on what was written previously) you describe is the main thing I was getting at, since the operating system and/or word processor would need to handle those context rules on the fly.

Gonna take a jab at this as someone with basic understanding of text and font shenanigans, but the Arabic abjad (not alphabet!) reads from right to left and characters are shaped differently based on their position in the word (initial, medial, final).

In 2026, it is still a pain to create a custom input method editor or to install them. :/ Or at least that was my experience when I dipped my toes into IMEs for conlang scripts and tried to get an ibus table of the Zbalermorna script for Lojban to work on my system.

a couple years back trying to mod minecraft, it kept crashing whenever any modded thing would spawn. turns out the problem was that the minecraft laucher was trying to read flilenames like "ZOMBIE" or "VILLAGER" as "zombıe" and "vıllager", using the turkish [Iı] instead of the english [Ii] (cont.)

thanks to another random turkish person on github trying to mod their own minecraft i found out that this was an issue with the official minecraft launcher that comes with the game. i used a third party alternative and everything just worked. i know how you feel lol
