Muni, Province and Feds on who's responsibility it is to solve homlessness

Jeff Thompson@thomjeff.bsky.social

Saint John Common Council discussing a report on the affects of homelessness and the discussion is similar to one City of Fredericton had last week: asking the province to step up. I will look for their position paper tomorrow. #nbpoli

Yeah, not wrong. The city needs to stay in its lane when it comes to healthcare and social services that are squarely in provinces lane. SJ council just mention the provincial task force announced over a year ago now has a ‘facilitator’ … for what purpose or reason? #nbpoli

It's one of a few things (housing also on the list) with no clear ownership to a solution and easier for everyone to pass the responsibility onwards rather than take any amount of action.

So maybe the ‘facilitator’ the provincial government ministerial task force formed last summer with urgent, a group of 5 to rise to the crisis, will bring some focus on what’s needed. Or maybe the cities finally saying enough. And good on them ‘cause the promise tax reforms ain’t coming.

And those subsidized so-called affordable units the private sector has built? They don’t want the subsidy as they don’t believe the services need with ever follow the tenant. They aren’t wrong. Fredericton needs 600 public housing units. It’s not happening. And it won’t with the current plan.

I disagree. The gap is public housing, a responsibility the feds left & province hoped subsidized private sector units would work. It hasn’t because its heck of a lot more than housing We have a minister for housing parading 10, 20 and 30 unit builds by nonprofits when it’s barely moving the needle

I think the 10/20/30 unit non profits are exactly what the solution should be, in addition to larger co-op and mixed income projects. The problem is that we should have been building these consistently for decades.
