Step 1 is to pick some visual identity, get a critical mass of the existing apps to all roll it out together. Just an icon will do to start. Other people will follow. It doesn’t have to be great, just consistent. And for gods sake, don’t wait for Bluesky to do something. We will die of old age.

I talk about this in my article. Check where I talk about a flywheel effect. It takes education of course, but all great marketing is about recency, frequency and relevance. More often and widely people see it, the easier will become to understand. (This is only a part of the education piece)

The internet population who know about Bluesky is tiny. The population on non-bsky PDSes are relatively tiny. The number of people on those independent PDSes who haven't yet heard of the Atmosphere (even as AT proto) is probably also very small. mu.social/profile/noz....

We need to think about how to onboard the +100m / +500m new users to the atmosphere, not the users we already have. We should start immediately!

Good design hides the plumbing. Reducing choice isn't dumbing things down, it's respecting people's time. Increasing login buttons doesn't 10x the freedom. People will churn. Most users don't want to understand ATProto. They want to sign in and talk to their mates.

Hick's Law is existential for any network trying to scale. Every extra log-in button costs users. We have to stop thinking like engineers and build for people who will never care as much as we do. We have to reduce the complexity.

I think you make a pretty compelling case for this, I'm going to think if we have something to contribute. One thing that people can look into is designsystemet.no/en/ , a design system that was created by the Norwegian public sector, but reusable by anyone.

@renderg.host 100% agree, and highly relevant for me as a builder at @sparkable.cc (blog.sparkable.cc/about). I‘d love to contribute to this discussion from a design/brand perspective. I think it‘s a great opportunity to make ATproto & the open social web feel more inviting, playful, and memorable.
