banning X is a national security issue for every country, plain and simple its explicit goal is to amplify and empower the largest Nazi-adjacent party in every country in which it operates it is also the largest deepfake porn generator in the world this is not a difficult call to make

This. My country is unrecognizable now, thanks to X unleashing hordes of Russian agitator propagandists pretending to be British, making everyone afraid, but when Elon decided to get involved, real people actually got hurt and people's homes destroyed. And he took that as licence to interfere more.

They know it, too, and the role of any left of extreme right media and person left of extreme right should be to bombard the message that this doesnt constitute freedom of speech encroachment or censorship, because thats what they are immediately gonna go with

When Brazil banned Twitter for a month Musk charged our supreme court and tried to incite a coup himself. Brazil is almost as divided as the US, but for those in the democracy side the message was clear, the man is pure greed and have no regards for anyone else.

I vaguely remember when Twitter was where you could find like and liberal minds. Then Musk took over and the negatives and the negativity made it unbearable. Trolls everywhere. Ugliness flourished. I don’t miss X at all.

I think this is right, but particularly in Europe they're facing an almost impossible set of choices. What do you do if you're facing a hostile administration fully willing to blackmail you with essential security needs you won't be able to back-fill for years?

The others are all in on weaponizing social media. It was always a problem with state actors manipulating the algorithms, but FB, an Ellison owned TikTok, etc. can be much more subtle about it. Elon is just stupid so he makes it obvious That countries aren’t discussing this security issue is insane

Basically, the only way to deal with this is to regulate the specific algorithms and types of data that are fed into them. If I had my way, everything would be regulated to be chronological. Everything else is too easy to abuse, at least chronological gives a chance at moderation.

It’s the new town square! But like, the town square has a “Nazis welcome” sign at every entrance, and there’s a giant robot in the middle that paints photorealistic pictures of children or your favorite celebrities having sex on demand, and you might get banned if you mock the private owner of it.

Elon, the mass murderer of hundreds of thousands of children, is also the largest disseminator of CSAM almost overnight. I think that should be brought up more often than the fact he also is the world's richest.

He is also the one that essentially bought an election seemingly specifically so that he could kneecap US regulatory bodies that are in charge of things like...reigning in AI corps and stopping him from disseminating CSAM.

I understand that people are afraid of the blowback here and there is real danger of US sanctions, because of who is running our government but domestically I think losing access to twitter is going to do much more damage to the local right wing than any backlash will help them

Frankly, we in the US ought to be sanctioned. We're acting like a pariah state and Trump can learn what an isolationist economy is really like.

and, well, "we're protecting the kids" is the easiest possible framework to go with - because you have piles of nonconsensual deepfakes, including of children, to point to as your justification

I agree with banning certain platform. the problem is there are already bills in congress that are couched in protection of children that require uploading govt issued ID to even go in the internet or onto any social sites. So as to completely destroy anonymity and free expression.

Wait, what? No - you can't "but won't someone think of the children" for an issue that ACTUALLY endangers children. Pretty sure that's only to be used disingenuously to further agendas that restrict rights.

It would be so simple to start by countries banning X until grok is removed. Grok doesn't need to be a feature. Machine output is not human speech either, so no free speech legal issue either.

How exactly is a 'ban on X' meant to work? Turkish and Russian attempts to do similar blocks have been failures. Ineffective due to VPNs or wildly overblocking using DPI at ISPs. So how would a government attempt to block X? What is being proposed here in concrete terms?
