I thought my bubble was small, but the fact that there's "hype" about a new skin for the npm registry just blows my mind and makes me question things about the seriousness of this industry.

Watching the way the maintainers have managed the project and how they interact with the community. There's a lot of effort around cultivating and developing skills, both hard and soft. Focus on humans over code. Hard to quantify in some ways, but you feel it.
