Possibly a key difference between 08 and now is it was possible for folks to pretend they never backed Iraq or dubya but still "supported the troops" and the GOP. Trump is now so thoroughly the GOP that once he gets mussolini'ed, folks could abandon the GOP too. Still need Dems to prosecute tho

Folks aren't going to abandon the GOP. Jan 6 happened and the GOP did not lose meaningful support to prevent them from gaining power in 2024

Yeah, I think that's absolutely right. The theoretical fear was that he had shooters who would regard him as a martyr if he faced consequences, and I really do think that fundamentally misread his appeal

So the key is that this Democratic party becomes something they aren't ever going to be under the current party structure? I don't think we should be spending so much of our time talking about what this broken party should do when we all know it won't do those things
