What's striking to me are the rules of engagement and the methodology of action here, which more or less is predicated on burying liberal delusions about "debate" or the "marketplace of ideas". The rules were ultimately very simple: amplify your own message and suppress your opponent's.

it is hard to sell how effective this was. the far right here was completely lost in the past two weeks because *nothing* of their tried and true methods to dictate public opinion and the media were working. even bot farming views to pump the algo did jack shit

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

We are watching a coup d’état attempt unfold in real time in Brazil. I’m consumed by desperation.

I had no idea what this fucking loser sounded like and now I just want to punch him in the throat.

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

Ken Russell’s The Devils has been so well received in its limited release that they’ve extended its run. If you’ve not seen it, I can’t give it a higher recommendation. The world was not ready for The Devils in 1971. Absolutely worth seeing in the big screen.

Yes, you should go see You Can See Everything. Doesn’t matter what you think of Elizabeth Holmes, it’s about following this bizarre journey to make this film. I’m still thinking about it.

Appalling. The point of this is not that DOJ thinks it can win this suit. It’s to create a “placeholder” suit to block certification for as long as possible while the litigation plays out, denying Peltola her seat.

Mine was literally Star Wars. I was 3 years old in 1977 and my parents took me to the theater. All the lights and sounds and colors and robots and aliens and spaceships and explosions. The deepest of impressions, like at a molecular level.

First film you saw at the cinema. The real first one, not the pretend one you tell people! Mine: The Empire Strikes Back, 1980, Wigan. We were near the front and I can still remember how massive the AT-ATs looked, looming over us out of the snow :) Film, year, where, and whatever stuck with you.

I saw it three more times in the theater on its initial theatrical run. When it made its network premiere in 1982, I taped that shit (on Betamax!), cut the commercials while recording, and watched it like 50 times that summer.

If younger folks ever wonder why Gen X is so fucking weird about Star Wars, the real question is, how could we not be? A cultural nuclear blast, aimed directly at us and hitting with pinpoint accuracy. Star Wars was our Beatles.

EBENEZER starring Johnny Depp has been rated PG-13 for "Frightening material." Director Ti West stated that he aimed to make a "spookier version" of the classic Charles Dickens tale "than ever before." In theaters November 13.

I can't even begin to imagine the bay area without BART, it's the thread that ties the bay together as a cultural region. It's horrifying that this is on the table

I went and saw Street Fighter with a buddy of mine with whom I used to play the original SFII at a Round Table Pizza in high school when it was new. So mostly a nostalgia exercise.

Apart from some anachronistic music choices which briefly took me out of it, the film is good spirited fun and a sloppy love letter to the franchise. Does not come close to the highs of the animated film but it’s leagues better than any previous live-action adaptation.

Said it before, I'll say it again: the grimmest political development in my lifetime is that we went from having old people who remember the Depression to having old people who remember the Eisenhower Administration.
