well the other thing though is Madison was quite clear that all his various structures would not work if the people lack virtue

Because they were *too* cynical and anticipated a equilbrium where eg: Congress would never relinquish their personal political power to the executive branch. A system built to set grubby power seekers against each other is cracking under the weight of sincere ideologues

I will say Madison's specific idea of getting this by separating legislative and executive branches does not work. what you want is thriving civil society, above all mass unionization bsky.app/profile/mark...

The whole point of "ambition must be made to counteract ambition" is that the whole thing falls apart if Congress is just a bunch of Renfields

my question here, tho, is this: Is it the proportionality or the parliamentary that's doing the work here? Like there's no reason the leg body in a pres system couldn't be proportionally constructed. Maybe I'm too much of a squish, but I do think there's some value in the leg being it's own thing.

I've read Linz' 'Perils of Presidentialism', and just reviewed it again, but I've always felt like his examples are a little selective and thinly sliced. Like, Italy (parliamentarian) is mentioned as an unstable democracy, but it's just kinda asserted that it's not important to the point.

this whole damn mess could have been taken straight out of a children's book about why voting for strongman authoritarianism is dumb as dogshit bsky.app/profile/thed...

Farmers who overwhelmingly backed Trump are now warning they are in the worst financial crisis since the 1980s.

Yggy deserves a lot of the scorn that goes his way but one retort I saw from him back in the day that I always like was that the U.S. would be better served by the constitution the U.S. Army wrote for Germany after WWII.

The democratic vote is the mirror by which a nation sees its true self, survival of the fittest and all. You can see what a nation truly values-not what it proclaims-in the condition of its weakest and its strongest.
