Until 2008, I didn’t have internet in my apartment. So I’d check email and social media at work, then go home and simply not check again until the next day, unless I was at the library or took my laptop to a coffee shop. That world feels impossibly far away now.

Hadn’t read any John le Carré in years, so I picked up his first two novels. Not as good as some of his bigger and better-known titles, but both still solid entertainments in their own right.

My mother-in-law got this plus a check in the mail yesterday. On the one hand, it’s grotesque bribery. On the other hand, it’s one healthcare, America. How much could it cost — $90?

You Can See Everything more than lives up to the hype. Went to see it with a friend, and we talked about it afterward for hours. Sit in the front row if you can!

Scrolling through online discussions of heterosexual marriage sometimes makes me feel like Homer Simpson saying "I sleep in a big bed with my wife." "I like my husband. He's a good person and kind to me."

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

It’s also nice to not have to print out directions from Mapquest before going out of town. Although I do love a good road atlas.

Indiana's MX-80 Sound scientifically hybridized hard rock with free jazz for more than 4 decades. Their sound presaged Big Black, Sonic Youth, Swans, Voivod, on and on. Guitarist Bruce Anderson would’ve turned 77 today. Something I wrote about several cassette releases they put out in the mid ‘80s.

The paperback of my novel Nonesuch is out in England today. Main edition on the right, special blue indy bookshops edition on the left. Sequel coming next year. Available from all good bookshops, and Amazon.

I know that abusive, shitty parents can take a multitude of forms, but goddamn, Amy Acton’s mother is straight out of central casting

Watched Digger last night, slept on it, moved from ambivalent to mildly positive but not going to jump on the “masterpiece” bandwagon. Reading that it lost $245m for the studio makes me feel like I’m still in the theater watching another final twist.

A brilliant follow-up to Jesus and John Wayne, and an especially essential read for men. I was brought up in and shaped by the evangelical subculture, but @kkdumez.bsky.social opened my eyes to so much that I missed about how women experienced that same world.

The small-town theater I grew up attending regularly made a miraculous comeback a few years ago but needs help securing its future after an unexpected recent calamity. Here's a link to the fundraiser and I'll tell you a little bit about the place in the thread below.

I love changing my email preferences to “one per week” and then getting four more emails over the next 24 hours. That’ll teach me not to select “unsubscribe from all”!

A definite sign of ageing is that you cannot impress me with "over 20 years" anymore. Am I expected to think this sauce is ancient, because it's as old as Nelly Furtado's Maneater?

Oh no, I must clutch my pearls, the harried young mom called in sick at her job a few more times than her boss liked. I don’t know if Mike Turner is actually in danger of losing this year, but when his cronies are hurling hilarious shit like this against the wall, ya gotta wonder.

Holy shit, this was a stunning read. @amysuiterclarke.bsky.social’s writing had me writhing in suspense. And in painful recognition, too — she absolutely nails how it feels to be shaped by a repressive belief system … and how the experience can loom over your soul long after you’ve broken free.

I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.

Whew. The ending left a sour taste, but Natsuo Kirino’s Out is one memorably bleak, brutal, and gripping crime novel.
