well the other thing though is Madison was quite clear that all his various structures would not work if the people lack virtue

Because they were *too* cynical and anticipated a equilbrium where eg: Congress would never relinquish their personal political power to the executive branch. A system built to set grubby power seekers against each other is cracking under the weight of sincere ideologues

You’re saying the anthropology underlying the entire foundation of our structures of government have one, hilariously obvious flaw?! PLOT HOLE, AMERICA.

Most Americans do not lack virtue. The big problems are that they're gullible--vulnerable to propaganda like all humans-- AND we are drowning in propaganda lies. Ppl who voted for this thought they voted for lower gas/grocery prices, an end to forever wars & deportation of violent criminals only.

This is the gov we get when most media/SMedia are Right Wing propaganda outlets that lie to get GOP votes for dumb authoritarian con artists--because those con artists cater to the desires of the wealthy GOP media owners. As long at T/GOP cater to their desires, they don't care what else they do.

I will say Madison's specific idea of getting this by separating legislative and executive branches does not work. what you want is thriving civil society, above all mass unionization bsky.app/profile/mark...

The whole point of "ambition must be made to counteract ambition" is that the whole thing falls apart if Congress is just a bunch of Renfields

“The people have democratic principles on their lips, but can’t spare the effort to safeguard it! The collapse of a government is the sin of its rulers and leaders. The collapse of democratic rule is the sin of every citizen!”

from Goldwater telling Nixon it was time to pack it in to every Republican hiding under the table and hoping someone else would deal with Trump after the pussy tape, a total moral collapse of the GOP

The Big Lie is that the founders had somehow figured out One Weird Trick to good governance. The reality is that good governance requires good people. Without the latter, no piece of paper means shit.

yeah. but a republic asks more of the general population to not be degenerate shitheads since they play an important formal role in it functioning, that isn't so true of a monarchy or dictatorship

No, no that's the opposite of what Madison or even moreso Adams would have said. A public with civic virtue is not a problem for the constitutional order they were envisioning but a benefit. They worried that without civic virtue in citizens an aristocracy would exercise dangerous oligarchic power.

Jeffries has a solution to the gridlock: Make secret deals with his longstanding friend Kushner to supply the votes to pass Trump’s agenda in the lame duck.

His point about ideology also just seems wrong (in terms of identifying the root problem). The problems with congress stem from the never-ending campaign season, the outsized focus on the presidency, and gerrymandering and other changes to elections. Ideology seems like a knock-on from that

The government is chock-full of self-serving "grubby power seekers." The current era is just exposing a lot of big flaws in the system's ability to withstand in the face of it. I really don't think "ideology" is the cause of the problem.
