wow "which is better, Carl Sagan as published or multiple iconic Carl Saganisms in a slightly different order", really makes you think, guess I'll give these guys all my money and then [foghorn] [slinky falling down the stairs]

even preferring human writing, NYT seems to suggest perhaps I don’t?

I took the bullet, sorry everyone for contributing to the stats (but also who cares about the stats it's clickbait) It's not even juicy or anything but for info:

Thank you! I was curious. Not surprised it’s some AI booster bullshit. “The gap is closing”?? Trained on “the sum of all human knowledge”?? Not to mention the idea that “produc[ing] writing with broad appeal” is a goal AND also a likely result of being trained on “many of humanity’s greatest books”

Also fun that "the gap is closing" but AI is already "trained on the sum of all human knowledge". What improvements could you possibly expect in the future then?

I agree, and I'd further guess that they misunderstood it because they're an LLM bsky.app/profile/cara...

In fact it's so egregious I've come around to the suspicion this is LLM-generated. Like, a human *could* make this mistake - if they'd never read the context and/or did not read English well - but it's way more likely of an LLM IMO. It's the exact "vibes over substance" mistake you'd expect of one.

Unsurprisingly, a rag that keeps firing human writers needs to convince its audience that perfectly smooth texture-less slop is preferable.

this is so fucking infuriating

"Looks like you guessed, out of a perverse defiant impulse, that some pathetic meatbag made a bunch of these quotes by looking for primitive and vestigial elements like 'a distinctive style,' which our perfect machines have sanded down to a smooth, homogenous word slurry" go fuck yourself!!!!

Like... does Roose think it's supposed to be "As well, ask a man"? That would be nonsense in context and mean something completely different. There's literally no missing punctuation, mistake OR intentional.

"Roose"? Are you saying that bit of writing has a byline attached to it? ... and that it's Kevin Roose? OK I was worried there for a second but the "an LLM wrote it" hypothesis still has legs after all
