I'm writing about self-hosting and got wondering why ports <1024 are privileged on Linux, and require you to be root to bind to them. Found this explanation and couldn't help but laugh. I'd always thought it was a bit of a hack. utcc.utoronto.ca/~cks/space/b...

It was all fun and games until those Linux people actually read some of the code in rlogind.... I remember someone "disappearing" from the IBM employee directory after complaining on USENET customers were making him work late on the hotfix. www.security-database.com/detail.php?a... (cert expired)
