From MD, US; resident of Gifu, Japan since 1992. I'm an IT grunt who speaks 日本語 exclusively but have no JLPT to back it up. Sorry. Never needed it. Sue me. I post about geeky things like radios, computers, cameras, the Baltimore Orioles, and METAALLLL

‘Wicker’ stars Alexander Skarsgård as a man made entirely of wicker, complete with a rock-hard wicker dick. But what about splinters? Bacteria? Degradation? Would it be advisable, from a sexual-health perspective, to mount a basket dick? We asked a gynecologist: vulture.visitlink.me/DNQwX5
At this point I would only be taking this test for ego massage. I passed the アマチュア無線技士1級国家試験 which was hard enough and actually afforded me a tangible reward (a class 1 amateur radio operator license). What would I do with a JLPT in late middle age?
People love to say the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is so hard that native speakers would fail it. That's bunk. The JLPT is built for non-native speakers and is all multiple-choice, so native speakers can pass it easily.
Attention all hams: EVE operation is here
We bounced a radio signal off Venus' surface! On 17+18 Oct the Dwingeloo Radio Telescope transmitted and Astropeiler Stockert received the echoes, 42 million km each way. We decoded a 10-character message from the echo. We're not finished yet: more echos on 24+25 Oct. www.camras.nl/en/blog/2026...
Mine is always "In the final scene of _Apollo 13_, the captain of the rescue ship Tom Hanks (as Jim Lovell) shakes hands with is the real Jim Lovell, wearing his real Navy uniform".
We all know the "Viggo broke his toe" story but what's another movie fact you're personally compelled to bring up every time without prompting? For me, it's the fact that Robin Tunney is wearing a wig in The Craft because of having just shaved her head to save her job filming Empire Records.

I ordered a replacement 3A power supply for a Raspberry PI 4b because it was constantly crashing due to undervoltage. I ordered it on Amazon.co.jp this morning at 7:55 am. It arrived at my door at 2:52 pm, which has to be some kind of a record.
As someone who's lived here for over three decades, I will point out that summers in Japan have *always* been raging steam locomotive fires, every single year. What's changed is, people are finally realizing that it's not particularly noble or smart to just stand there and take it.
ICYMI: Japan's summers are getting hot enough that some traditions are fading fast. One Buddhist temple even changed how it runs so that people wouldn't ironically die on Obon. More below on how Japan's changing the ways it spends its hot summers.
