In the US, please check out bookshop.org, which partners with local/indie bookstores. You can specify a store to support, otherwise the profit goes into a general pool distributed among participating booksellers. They're also here on Bluesky at @bookshop-org.bsky.social.

I have no local bookstores. Online is it for me. Got any suggestions for something not Amazon?

I buy a lot of books from Thriftbooks. Most are used but in very good condition. I went back to buying a lot of older books that either I havent read, or am re-reading because its been so long.

Also in the US, Barnes and Noble has a strong online presence, useful if you're tied into their ebooks, Kobo also does ebook sales, and Powell's is a big indie bookseller with a really comprehensive Web site.

I'm considering getting a kobo device, epub seems a little more open than mobi (Kindle) and not thrilled about being in bezos ecosystem anymore. Also just recently bought the amazing Ursula K LeGuinn bundle from humble. Does anyone else make epub readers?

A friend bought be a Kobo for my birthday specifically so I could use it for the Discworld Humble Bundle. I highly recommend it and will not be replacing my paper white when it dies

John, Will these bookstores send to #FPOs? For folks who make large orders to be sent to military addresses, being able to have orders sent direct to FPOs is a huge deal. I recently sent 100 titles to ship, and while I tried independent sellers, Amazon was the only one that would send direct.

Some of my greatest treasures were found at Half Price Books. Granted this was back before internet, but their variety was a breath of fresh air from the prepackaged selection in vogue for the month or season. Discovered a hardbound copy of Satanic Verses by Salmon Rushdie by accident!
