Absolutely a brilliant songwriter and also someone who knew her own worth - she famously turned down Elvis covering one of her songs because Col. Tom Parker (Elvis' manager) insisted she hand over a large chunk of the songwriter royalties for the privilege. Smart, and right, to stand up for herself.

Just ridiculous how good of a songwriter she was, too. On top of the kindness and that wonderful voice and beautiful, caring spirit, she was also a no-joke brilliant songwriter.

When Whitney Houston covered it, she made a butt-ton of money, which she invested in a Black neighborhood in Nashville. So it's a good thing she never gave up that publishing.

If memory serves she recounted in an interview how she cried over having to deny Elvis the license to record her song. She very much wanted him for the song (I Will Always Love You iirc) but knew sharing songwriting credit/royalty was unfair to her. Principled from the jump.
