I didn't think I'd watch someone with 30 tabs open in the same window trying to look for a tab, failing to find it, and then opening the same page in a new tab, but I did and it was very uncomfortable to watch.

I am a heavy user of some keyboard shortcuts and Cmd/Ctrl-T for a new tab is just so easy. Hit that and type. Especially after mapping CapsLock to be Cmd/Ctrl for easiest reach 😆

I assumed that people with 20+ tabs open in the same window might simply have some different way of organising or remembering them that I didn't understand, but I'm starting to think they don't.

The best solution for this that I ever saw was an app that indexed every page you read, so you had a custom search available personalized to your usage history. IDK why it didn't catch on. (It had some issues that made me stop using it, but could have been great.)

Guilty - it's that "I know I'm not quite done with this", and both a reminder and a promise to yourself to come back to it... And then there's the "I know I saw it recently", but can't see it in your tabs... "recently" is a relative time frame.

I am one of those people, and I just realized that this subject is always touched by people that are uncomfortable by it, while at the same time we just don't care. What's going on here? Why are some people very uncomfortable/puzzled by it?

From my perspective, leaving the tab open is just the laziest strategy to manage tabs, I don't have to decide if I am finished with the tab right now, and I also get some kind of chronological sorted history of tabs opened so ... why not?

I mean, people should do what they want, but unfortunately I think of it as the computer equivalent of having piles of clothes lying around on the floor. Why not use bookmark folders? Or Zotero or something equivalent

currently I have 360 and 235 tabs open, some of them are open since 2013... but I recently managed to clean a bit and close around 250 of them, so I am sure I get it under control someday (in a distant future) 🫣

I've had 1000+, and I have some idea where some of them are, but the vast majority (~900) are just leftovers of an area of tabs lost in the vastness of UI wasted space, pure cognitive chaos that I can tap into for an inspiration that was once felt but lost to the oblivion of lack of time

what you saw was a fool suffering from skill issue that doesn't represent the broader 'has dozens of tabs open at any given time' community. now with mozilla AND chrome both having tab groups, and function to type stuff in that link in the bar and getting 'switch to tab' if match, shouldn't happen

The search tabs function is great, so that rarely happens. If you still can't remember how to find it again (and thus open another tab!), then you search history. You keep on doing this till your computer slows down so much, you have to tidy up! 😀

then they are double fools. they should be able to find stuff they have open on their computer even with 100 tabs. they should know each tab, or at the very least every thematic tab group bunched together, like they do their own children only exception is stressful deadline moments that don't...

No, we just forget about them haha. Related: Recently I discovered tab groups. Now I have ~180 tabs open in one tab group and ~90 in another one. (+ like 7 more groups with a few tabs each). When you think you have to many tabs open, just start a new group, never close a tab again 😍

Oh, having lots of tabs open on your phone doesn't count I think. I meant when the bar on your desktop browser has so many that you can't tell what's already open, but on phones there isn't a tab bar anyway!

Guilty as charged. Have 100s of tabs open, each on multiple devices. Workflow _should_ be Add to Reading List? -> (N) Archive? -> (N) Bookmark? -> Discard. But Archive & Bookmark time consuming (different archival techniques per page, plus tagging for both). Besides, tab searches work great!

Actually that was a very useful call to action - thank you for that. Found several improvements to the DEVONthink application that I use for web clipping and archiving which have significantly unblocked my workflow.
