One thing that has genuinely shocked me over the past year is how many faculty are now using LLMs for nearly every part of their jobs. Not as tools to assist their thinking, but to offload the entire job itself. 1/7

this is very "oh my god, he admit it" re the gendered dynamics around AI

It’s hard to decide what part of this story on Marissa Mayer’s new startup is most loathsome, but this “women need a wife or, in other words, a digital servant” construction makes me want to flip over an actual table www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/s...

Every company is super into the idea that you want to have emotional dependence on your car or vacuum or toothbrush and no dudes I just want your stuff to stop bricking itself every time you release a new "shinier buttons" firmware update.

Yesterday I needed an algorithm for ranked choice, instant runoff voting (Use case: as a control to test/compare/verify Plackett Luce model estimation for "best presentation" award at upcoming Quant UX Con) Half an hour reading R packages mostly just confused me. So I decided to write my own

And BTW the initial model we're using also took about 15 minutes, and — thanks to the super-clear R PlackettLuce package — ran correctly the first time with less than 10 lines of code

My function ran without syntax errors on try 1 but had a subtle error. Results looked good ... but comparison to the other model showed they weren't. I fixed that and discovered a second subtle error. Fixed the second error, tested more ... and decided it was all good. Total time: 15 minutes (!)

That is not because I am any kind of coding whiz. Rather, it demonstrates that: 1. If you really understand a problem, then coding shouldn't be tough. If you don't, you can't outsource that 2. The parts that are tough are testing and ensuring the right result, with comparison to other algorithms

Now I don't and won't code with LLMs because: (a) LLM code is stolen from people without attribution, which I think is immoral; and (b) I actually like to write code. How long did I expect it to take to write my own in R? Maybe an hour ... but 2 or 3 hours to debug and trust wouldn't surprise me

I've mentioned before I've updated my contracts to make sure everything in the production of my books is done by humans and not "AI"; if you're wondering what such a thing looks like, here's a clause covering that from a recent contract.

Thread is about success in books and music, but the point is true in general "The keys to success in _____" is always a just-so story "____" can be writing, startup success, politics, tenure, executive leadership, sports, whatever. "Rising to the top" requires effort but is not explained by it.

All of that matched what I've seen in 27 years. There's a ton of survivor bias in a lot of chat about what it takes to get to the top. It wildly affects people's personal mythologies.

These days, it’s easy to succumb to hopelessness. But I explain why doomerism can lead to paralysis in a new article I wrote for The Guardian The problem with doomerism isn’t necessarily that the risks are exaggerated, but that it may create a self-fulfilling prophecy and create helplessness

Anti-design is the design of use cases that appear to justify the existence of a product that was not designed to satisfy a purpose OR the design of use cases to distract from the lucrative use cases that are not good for PR 2/x

"For example, if you're doing an experiment, you should report everything that you think might make it invalid--not only what you think is right about it"

"So I have just one wish for you--the good luck to be somewhere where you are free to maintain the kind of integrity I have described, and where you do not feel forced by a need to maintain your position in the organization, or financial support, or so on, to lose your integrity."

I see this repeatedly with my female colleagues. They do amazing work, often far exceeding that of their male peers, yet are neither celebrated nor promoted to the same degree. I feel morally injured just witnessing it. I cannot imagine what it feels like to experience it directly.

We found that the most gendered experience wasn’t work-life balance, the focus of most retention efforts. It was feeling devalued, in formal evaluations, but particularly in everyday interactions. Unlike every other topic, the gender gap in devaluation was larger among more senior faculty.

If the system returns you as a suspect, the police may put you in a lineup. In a lineup, you will look like the culprit (that's why the AI face recognition software included you). Witnesses will be biased to pick you. We should all be worried about these systems.
