Why are many academics still ok signing with Brockman (or his agency)? Many are oblivious to the Brockman-Epstein link (despite the 2019 articles above). It’s still not widely known. So let’s change that. If you or someone you know is planning a popular book, don’t go with the Brockman agency.

it's wild bc there are SO many good agents out there, many of whom work for agencies with far more resources than Brockman has. it's not like Brockman has some secret sauce

I guess it's possible that a decent number of people think "well, it was John Brockman who was involved, not his son Max who leads the agency now, so it's fine", and a few more who just don't care about the Epstein connection. but I suspect you're right that many people just don't know

there are ~300 book deals with Brockman (agency) listed on Publisher's Marketplace, including two from last month vast majority of writers they rep are academics (most recently, Lindy Greer, Brooke Scelza, Cynthia Miller-Idris, Jonathan Haidt, James Robinson, Forrest Stuart, Daron Acemoglu, etc)

Brian Greene (eg THE ELEGANT UNIVERSE), Carl Zimmer (eg SHE HAS HER MOTHER'S LAUGH), and I (tba) are represented by Eric Simonoff at WME. Gretchen McCulloch (BECAUSE INTERNET) works w/ Howard Yoon, also WME. Nichola Raihani w/ Will Francis at Janklow & Nesbit. many great agents out there

for scientists looking into who reps who, a publisher's marketplace account provides a ton of this info in great detail, quite helpful for those looking to get the lay of the land in trade publishing

When I was doing my graduate study I signed up to the Edge mailing list and it was aspirational. I perceived bright minds talking and writing about super interesting things, and I hoped to be in those circles later in my career It was only with the 2019 article that I realised what was underneath
