1/9 Birds make ultrafast decisions In this study, carrion crows were able to make decisions twice as fast as primates, including humans. Let me briefly explain the findings and share my thoughts. (paper) www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
this is an excellent piece and I encourage all academics to give it a read: it articulates more clearly than I've seen elsewhere the reasons underlying the anxiety many of us in science have regarding the risks that commercial AI presents to the public goods we spend our lives creating
Likely the most important thing I've ever written — if you're an academic and the AI mania unsettles you, here's my best shot at presenting some intellectual tools that might help you articulate why. arxiv.org/abs/2610.27251
as an American expatriate I was surprised to learn that in order to vote in national elections, Israelis have to physically go to Israel to cast ballots what a concept - are there other countries that disallow absentee voting?
every time I'm back in Montréal, switching languages every twenty-five seconds, I think of "c'est vraiment top notch"
there's really something charming about québecois code-switching, somebody on marketplace describing the quality of a used item "c'est un peu taché avec le temps mais vraiment top notch"
while every generation thinks they're better than the previous one, parenting has advanced in leaps and bounds by numerous objective metrics for example, it is far less common today for parents to hit their kids than it was when I was a kid. this is unequivocally a good development
Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

if you don't believe me, do a web search for "attitudes toward corporal punishment" and add whatever part of the world you live in. I am tweeting this from a hotel in montréal so here are the statistics for Québec parents. tldr: line goes down statistique.quebec.ca/en/communiqu...
Guys I'm on my favourite train again
was reminded by @sifu.tweety.fish of the new Montréal transit infrastructure that links McGill and UdeM, two of the largest universities in Canada, reducing a 25-min, two-transfer pain in the arse to a 4-min ride under Mount Royal It's kind of wild when depicted in screenshot-annotated form lol
Started the morning at @crblm.bsky.social for student talks from @kbyers.bsky.social and a visit from Casey Lew-Williams who is talking about the First 1000 Days project (20 years' worth of in-home video about infant/child development in 15 families)

Good metaphor here for risks of uncritical AI usage in the scientific process
This is exactly the principle that has fucked up everything from deli flyers to UX in billion-dollar products Once upon a time, even if you were doing something on your own, it took long enough to do that it made you think about what you were doing! You had time to think "hang on, this sucks."
