I am utterly delighted by this subversive use of the Bluesky label feature, where you can subscribe to a custom app that then adds visible labels to profiles This one shows you which posh expensive private school British public figures attended, plus their current fees bsky.app/profile/dadd...

GitHub labeler is great. Using them for actual moderation, seems, problematic. I wish for labels to work like custom badges. Things you agree to have tagged on your profile, but verified by a trusted third party.

A lot of people are concerned about the potential for abuse with this custom label feature What's the worst case scenario here, given that labels are only visible to the people who opt-in to seeing labels from that specific labeler?

Co-ordinated harrasment campaigns can already share links to Bluesky profiles that they plan to target using off-site mechanisms like shared Google Docs, WhatsApp groups etc Is the threat from custom labels purely one of making things more convenient for those groups, or is there something else?

This is both amazing and I have no problem having a label applied. I went to an old Irish school, it is now public (no tuition), but there is still a boarding fee. “Kilkenny College (Tuition now free; boarding €11,853 per year)”

But when I click on any of them I get this scary looking thing, I do not want to use such stuff against a post I liked and am trying to bookmark. Only safe option seems "Other". Very peculiar "UI" if this is how it is supposed to work.

This is definitely a great feature, but there's something about it that makes me uncomfortable. Couldn't this be used for harassment? Imagine an app that "labels" people in derrogatory ways.

It's always up to the user to decide what labels they're going to subscribe to. I don't think there would be any turned on by default. Obviously you have the problem that the designer will subsequently decide to change it in unwanted ways, or will be convinced to hand it off to someone malicious.

Yeah I'm not too worried about that since seeing these labels is an opt-in thing - it's not much different from someone having a website somewhere else that says nasty things and links to Bluesky profiles

I went to a private/public school, but got an "assisted place" so almost all of my fees were paid for by the government. There's no other way a lad like me from a working class family could have attended.

I'm explicit with the labeller that scholarship pupils, grant pupils, etc, are still included - because it's the later effects that are useful context - students from these schools get a leg up and a degree of privilege, which contributes eg to the overrepresentation in British media/politics

Fair, though I would argue I've never had a leg up in my entire life other than the assisted place. More importantly, I have zero interest in politics other than voting the Tories out.
