Huh oh. As a committed anti-conspiracy-theorist for the "phones listen to your microphone and targeted ads based on what you say" thing I can tell this is going to be exhausting

I think probably 95% of speculation that your phone is secretly listening to you is overblown, but man the tech industry really does not do itself any favors with that 5% arstechnica.com/tech-policy/...

Did you miss this thread back in 2018? x.com/dylanmckaynz... Even though the OS might be locked down, FB finds ways to exfiltrate your data anyway. They take anything they can. It's not a question of whether or not they are harvesting extra data from your phone, it's a question of what and when.

My argument here is absolutely not that these companies don't invade our privacy in all kinds of weird and upsetting ways It's that targeting ads to us based on spying though our microphones is one of the few things that they do NOT do, and it's bad that so many people believe that one

It's just that it hasn't been proven yet. Given the other things they already do, we should logically assume that they DO record us somehow, via an unknown zero day or other exploit. They may even be in collusion with the two OS developers. All of this is possible and more likely than mass delusion.

I think we should assume the opposite, especially given how transparent they are with the data they do collect (hence that export Twitter thread) And Apple have earned a lot more trust than Facebook have

There's no good reason to trust a for-profit enterprise. Their singular goal is to extract your value. If they have the capability to do so, they will extract any value they can. Including your private convos. But pulling from phones is risky. I bet most cases are conversations inside stores etc.
