Microsoft just released a tool that lets you convert Office files to Markdown. Never thought I'd see the day. Google also added Markdown export to Google Docs a few months ago. github.com/microsoft/markitdown

Funny that, even when they define the formats, this library is just a wrapper of other Open Source libraries that struggled for years to do the conversion. Would have been nice for Microsoft to open, develop and maintain instead of just reusing.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. Hopefully it incentivizes them to participate in improving the existing open source libraries. Sharing it under the Microsoft GitHub org comes with a degree of quality expectation, that I hope they live up to.
