Here’s an idea for Zohran Mamdani to create more jobs in NYC: he could ask Julie Menin and City Council to relegalize the construction of new hotels, which Bill de Blasio banned citywide as a parting gift to the hotel workers union on his way out of office in 2021 www.nytimes.com/2026/06/02/n...

You are overstating. Here are a few special permit hotel applications: zap.planning.nyc.gov/projects/202... zap.planning.nyc.gov/projects/202... zap.planning.nyc.gov/projects/202... A special permit does make it hard, but it's a legal use and it is not banned.
...been since before the citywide special permit was enacted. IDK what this filing is about, but it's not a new hotel, so it doesn't count. That third one has had no activity in over two years, and it was reported that they're abandoning the hotel plan and doing a resi conversion: archive.ph/jejIq

I'm sure that some day, if the special permit remains, hotel rates will rise so much that somebody will win the approval of and build a new hotel with room rates of $1,000/night or something crazy like that. But it looks like that day is not today. For all intents and purposes, the hotel ban stands.
