Check out the QTs – just falling over themselves to applaud him for this idiocy (which isn’t his administration’s initiative or even the city’s, it’s some ineffective altruism nonprofit’s). He’s got a mandate to do whatever he wants. So what does he want to do?

Could new bus shelter roofs help New Yorkers stay cool in extreme heat? We're testing a few in Brownsville to find out: a green roof covered with native plants, and reflective roofs covered with low-cost, heat-resilient film.

La Sombrita actually provides some shade! It was woefully inadequate and they should've gone harder to attack all of the reasons it was the best they could do, but it actually would have cast some shade.

I think there is a image-based social media reason to why these things tend to attract more praise & funding than boring policy advocacy. It's the kind of instagrammable feel-good story a non-profit can use to convince a philanthropy board, especially one of generalists doing it as a side job.

this seems closer to those posts of half a solar panel on a car roof or something, designed to seem clever. maybe i'm just splitting hairs idk

It's small (necessarily – it has to be supported structurally by a bus shelter) so it cannot absorb any real quantity of rainwater. Any maintenance will be difficult since it's off the ground (so you have to bring in a truck with a ladder). Brown water will drain off of it onto a clear bus shelter.

It isn't going to make any difference in temperatures, which is the stated claim, for two reasons: 1) it doesn't provide any shade, and 2) it's so small that any evapotranspiration provided will be very minimal. Everything it claims to achieve is done 100x better with a normal street tree.

Rockefeller and Ford are some of the worst scam kind of foundations out there: lots of men and women in wool suits attending galas and talking of the future, but then funding abysmally silly things (I'm not really against putting planters around the city, but it probably was a seven figure grant)
