Went down a rabbit hole and of course Maggie “withhold all the important details about Trump Whitehouse for my book because $$$ > journalistic ethics or the public wellbeing” Haberman is a NYTimes nepo baby.

Vaquera Elisa@boxelderdust.bsky.social

The Hard Hat Riot is the single most important and consequential independently organized labor action in post-Gilded Age American history but the entire left-of-center has deliberately chosen to completely forget it because of how utterly embarrassing it is to us

To be clear, ALL “gifts” presented to any President are the American people’s and get archived for future display and historical purposes. No President ever gets to keep any gift given to them. And sure as hell not the illegitimate one currently illegally squatting in the White House.

Bloomberg News@bloomberg.com

Gifts presented to President Donald Trump by Swiss executives were actually for the American people, according to Bern’s top trade diplomat.

The guys who came up with DHS (e.g. Bill Kristol et al) are now like "yeah, it was a bad idea and should be abolished." So abolishing DHS is not just moderate, its even the conservative position.

I am entirely serious when I say that this should be seen as a moderate position. It specifically and surgically dismantles institutions that did not exist pre-9/11 and assigns their functions much as they were assigned pre-9/11.

Take a look at all of the volunteer committee positions open in my town. This is exactly what local government SHOULD NOT BE. All of these boards, committees, etc should either be dissolved by the state or moved into actual town gov't and staffed by professionals. www.capenews.net/mashpee/news...

capenews.netVolunteers Sought For Mashpee CommitteesMore than a dozen committees in the Town of Mashpee are in need of new members. The town's latest list of vacancies, published this month, includes 40 openings, ranging from

Unfortunately Boston hasn’t gotten the memo either. The “progressive champion” Wu has torpedoed housing construction (as well as safe streets efforts). At least the much hated milquetoast mods like Healey seem to get it on permitting and state overruling local control.

Jordan Grimes@cafedujord.bsky.social

It's genuinely remarkable (and extremely frustrating) how much better the left has gotten on housing production and zoning in virtually every big city other than San Francisco

Notice how all these failures are administrative and human-centered failures and have nothing to do with the utility and usefulness of ALPRs? We need MORE automated traffic enforcement to make our streets safer.

The New Bedford Light@newbedfordlight.bsky.social

A deep dive into Fall River's use of Flock license-plate cameras finds similar problems that have surfaced in New Bedford and elsewhere: lack of oversight as police officers searched thousands of times since 2021 while entering vague or nonsensical reasons. More buff.ly/VTez656

As a former denizen of LessWrong, something I found interesting about it epistemically was the “small-c conservative” nature of assuming you DONT know all the facts and could be wrong and then trying to address your underlying biases. Of course it became “well we are LESSWRONG this we are CORRECT”

Good. Farmers are a big reason we are in this mess, they get $100s of billions in subsidies a year, and still demand we worship the ground the walk on. They need to get to the find out part of fafo.

Farmers who grow soybeans, corn, cotton and other crops are facing another year of losses as soaring fuel and fertilizer costs offset higher revenues. n.pr/3TjGa7J

Did you know all your brain is doing is integrating under the curve when you throw a baseball? Something a TI-83 could do?

Kathryn Tewson@kathryntewson.bsky.social

You know that all they do is linear algebra, right? They aren’t doing anything a TI-84 can’t do, they just do it faster.

Like the met result is everyone is worse off: my wife and I don’t get an evening, my kid get less sleep, and he becomes very persnickety as the week goes on bc of sleep debt. Yet the state allows no flexibility; no opt-out; no choice for parents

Like, Fall River is poor by MA standards. And after Trump killed offshore wind Fall River lost a $300 million factory that would've provided a 30% increase in desperately needed property taxes. Just let the growth happen.

Our billionaires nowadays suck. Where are the new universities, new civic institutions, new public works? Carnegie, Vanderbilt, Rockefeller, etc where all brutal industrialists but they left behind a grand public contribution. Today’s billionaires are a bunch of ‘roided chuds.

GOP: Mercury or PFAS in your water? Don’t care! Anti-depressants or hormones in your water? Emergency!

EPA is launching a drinking water study that will test, for the first time, for traces of the abortion pills mifepristone and misoprostol — advancing a major goal of anti-abortion activists who have spent years trying to use environmental regulations to curb access to the drugs

It’s funny they think we might lose to China over AI when we’ve already lost in the field of renewable energy, batteries, and EVs. Those are the technologies of the future.

FinTwitter@fintwitter.bsky.social

U.S. HOUSE SPEAKER MIKE JOHNSON SAYS THAT 'IF CONGRESS JUST RACES IN AND DOES SOME SORT OF EMERGENCY SESSION TO TRY TO REGULATE AI, WE WILL LOSE THE RACE TO CHINA', CALLING THAT 'A THREAT TO EVERY SINGLE AMERICAN'.

As a neoliberal technocrat this suggests that the best defense is a high-enough congestion fee

War is so fucking stupid. Schlieffen Plan? Drive at Paris. Fall Rot? Drive at Paris. Barbarossa? Drive at Moscow. Desert Storm? Drive at Baghdad. Invasion of Ukraine? Drive at Kyiv. Prigozhin? Drive at Moscow. HTS? Drive at Damascus. IT'S ALL JUST DRIVING ON HIGHWAYS AT FUCKING CAPITALS

I am so pissed that Flock has destroyed the minor credibility automated traffic cameras were finally getting back. Speed and red light cameras save lives.

Unearthed video: Leaked Flock webinar reveals Flock employees teaching police how to surveil anti-Trump No Kings protestors and track their vehicles.

Also, what so few people recognize about eg Danish and European (esp Northern European) countries is that they have very high VATs (a type of sales tax) in which they explicitly trade private consumption of goods and services for public goods.

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

People SAY this, but the main complaint you hear from people is "I can't afford anything," and wide-scale redistribution would result in a huge number of those people HAVING LESS MONEY. They'd be able to afford less! On net, they'd be worse off, that's what redistribution is.

Oh we know Ken, and it involves a lot of trips to London with your mistress while buying her stuff with misappropriated state tax dollars.

I have only a $2500 budget to build a data science-focused work station. Can someone give me a good recommendation? Focus is memory, processing (CPU cores - I parallelize but don’t do AI training), then storage.

I’ve found myself in a weird place where I both reject Marxism-Leninism yet fully embrace a type of Liberal Vanguardism that I call Socialism with Neoconservative Characteristics.

ellie lockhart (she/they)@eleanor.lockhart.contact

I, for one, want my progressive politics to be resilient to discovering true things about the past, rather than reliant on convincing everyone to believe things that aren't born out by further investigation

If I can get his attention @jamellebouie.net I think this is the core of what is so disturbing about UET. It posits that the President is the most legitimate exhortation of the popular will (despite elections for the House and Senate) and thus must be allowed to act unabridged by laws and Congress.

Burnished rows of steel@acreed.bsky.social

Yes. A key component of fascism is the mobilization component and that the leader somehow represents the collective “will” of the people at large. This is also the theory that underpins Unitary Executive Theory which is why I view Roberts, more so than Trump, as an actual capital-F Fascist.

The truth is the only member of SCOTUS worth retaining at this point is Justice Jackson - Kagan & Sotomayor should be allowed to retire to a seaside dacha while the five GOP operatives get tossed in a deep, dark dungeon.

Andy Craig@andycraig.bsky.social

There's no standing for states to sue over that EO yet because it's just the president of the United States officially proclaiming his order to illegally interference in state elections, and you have to wait and see how and if agencies actually follow what he said first, is pants-on-head lunacy.

I think I have the solution for how we should deal with Trump voters: a poll tax. If you ever voted for Trump, you must pay $2000 x each time you voted for him AND pay a one time 5% wealth tax. Now I’ve solved your budget crises and dumb**s voter crises.

Burnished rows of steel reposted

You can’t talk about debt without talking about how we got into a bad predicament, and there’s only one correct answer: tax cuts enacted this century

This is one of those arguments that sounds like slopulism but is actually, if anything, understated. 56% of Colorado river water goes to GROWING FEED FOR LIVESTOCK IN THE DESERT.

STOP GROWING FUCKING LETTUCE IN THE DESERT THIS IS ACTUALLY A VERY EASY PROBLEM TO SOLVE

I spent too much money to get quality solar powered post lights for my deck and solar powered landscaping lights for my walkway and dam g, actually buying quality non-Chinese non-Amazon products is amazing. So simple to install.

I saw yesterday that some right-wing outlets were running stories about me, which I’m used to. But this time I’m going to say something about it, because these were framed to imply that I was aligned with their own transphobia. ⬇️

Note also that this is what happens when your answer to fossil fuels is not “carbon tax” but instead oppose things likes pipelines and drilling leases and LNG terminals. These companies still get rich in the latter; in the former the public gets money and the same outcome

Senator John Hickenlooper@hickenlooper.senate.gov

Every day the Iran war drags on, Americans pay the price. Donald Trump has little incentive to end it when his billionaire friends keep getting richer while working people struggle to fill their tanks and pay for the basics.

He spends a lot of time talking about overbuilding infrastructure to meet peak demand loads, yet VPPs are much better at handling outlier demand events than walloping people with spot prices. VPPs don’t (generally) cause grid congestion and their disbursed nature means they handle regional …

demand spikes much better, because you have to move a lot less power across interchanges! Like the whole weird rant against VPPs bc he doesn’t like the Rocky Mountain Institute (which neither do I) just ruined the article.

The IRS’s own research suggests about 3/4ths of the tax gap is from “small businesses” cheating on their taxes. So once again, buy big corp - they pay their taxes.

Cameron 🇺🇸🗽🦅@cameroncorduroy.bsky.social

(the IRS' lack of funding and manpower is another reason wealth taxes are a silly idea but y'all aren't ready for that conversation)

This pervasive view that we can achieve an European style (or even Canadian style) welfare state by simply taxing the rich is toxic. Across local/state/federal levels we collect ~28% GDP in tax revenue. The European avg is ~36%. You can’t reach that only “taxing the rich” you need consumption taxes

This is a good example of why there are two types of ex-GOP types: there are the Tom Nichols/Dispatch who still act blindsided by the fascism that arose from their side, and The Bulwark types who have given mea culpas about their roles. Treat the former with skepticism and the latter as allies.
