I appreciate this take, and I think you put into words a feeling I've been having lately about wanting the discussion around the "value" of AI to go beyond the utility.
If/when you synthesize your thoughts on the global and societal value of AI, I'll be looking forward to reading that.
That went places I wasn’t expecting. Loved how you didn’t try to convince me to one side or the other, instead bringing it back to utility, meaning, and efficiency
Value could also be the ability to claim ownership of the content you produce via AI. The question about AI generated content is who owns the content? You or the owner of the tool? The ability to defend intellectual property that was generated by AI under copyright laws is limited.
Does the rice cooker your friend gave you remove "meaning" from your meals (because it reduces your interaction with cooking) or increase it (because of the association with your friend)?
Really interesting article. My feelings are similar. Even when what matters is utility, if I use think I feel like I care less about what I'm doing and that doesn't align with my mindset. It's also conflicting knowing the amount of energy it consumes and the unethical origin of the training data.
