Back on Twitter, I had separate personal and professional accounts, but I want to have only one profile here. So I might post something like "Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again!" followed by "How query optimizers work, a 🧵"

I am going to be working through "Operating Systems: Three Easy Pieces" by Arpaci-Dusseau & Arpaci-Dusseau. Is anyone interested in joining me for virtual discussions and possibly even an audio/video discussion on occasion? The book is available online for free, so the monetary cost is zero!

I just started Sword of the Lictor, and I have to say that I have never read anything like the Book of the New Sun. If you like bleak sci-fi that makes you as a reader work hard (niche, I know), you have got to read this series.

Name your top 15 TV shows ever, gut instincts only: The West Wing Andor Breaking Bad Star Trek: DS9 Severance Dr. Who Stargate: SG1 The Expanse Seinfeld Twin Peaks Community Arrested Development The Office MacGuyver For All Mankind

This post is unavailable.

So I've been wanting to write a sci-fi story about a planet that gets tidaly locked to its star after a cataclysm and the societal tensions that ensue. I have literally started working on simulation software to make sure the cataclysm is physically plausible. Does that mean I get a new nerd badge?

I am reading The Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe, and I don't think I have ever had to go through a work of modern fiction this slowly. It's rewarding, but it's a challenging read! #booksky

A few have suggested that some aspects of this mission--joy, international teamwork, diversity--are being played up to stick it to the hateful attitude of the administration. But I don't think it's that. I think it's just that those things are essential to and inseparable from a mission like this.

As a Christian, I don't think federal agencies should be referring to "Christ, our Savior" in any context. I don't need my government to validate my faith. That's why it's called faith. More importantly, my government shouldn't be invalidating the religions of other Americans.

I find myself with a significantly larger block of free time than I usually have, and I'm going to do the only logical thing: Learn OCaml.

More context on this #Artemis II image: * This is the night side, lit by moonlight. You can see city lights in Spain & Portugal, & a sliver of day at lower right * The Sun is entirely behind Earth, which makes it a kind of solar eclipse, but w/ Earth doing the eclipsing instead of the Moon: ☀️🌍🚀🌕

I am working on a research language that is designed primarily for LLMs to read and write and for humans to review. It seems like this is the direction the software industry is headed, so why not lean into the idea?

I appreciate beautiful application design with thoughtful use of color, but I honestly prefer spartan monochrome UIs most of the time.

After literally months of wanting to plan and track my workouts better, I finally did it! I have reference sheets for warm-ups and cool-downs as well as weekly workouts with progressions and a monthly tracking sheet.

Discworld QOTD, from Thud! “Beating people up in little rooms…he knew where that led. And if you did it for a good reason, you’d do it for a bad one. You couldn’t say ‘We’re the good guys’ and do bad-guy things.”

Discworld QOTD, from Making Money "‘Even tyrants have to obey the law.’ He paused, looking thoughtful, and continued: ‘No, I tell a lie, tyrants do not have to obey the law, obviously, but they do have to observe the niceties.’"

Is anyone working on a programming language that is designed for LLMs first? Code is already very conducive to LLM generation, but I imagine there are likely different design trade-offs if a human is not the primary one interacting with the system.

After the Boston Massacre, the soldiers responsible were arrested and received fair trials. King George recalled the regiment to England, and then American leaders were like “good, that was enough, we’ll remain your loyal subjects forever…” wait, that’s not right…

We should not have to watch a video of a man being shot from sixteen different angles to prove that he didn’t deserve to die in the gutter.

I'm not sure how, but Starbucks and the like seem to have convinced a lot of people that is *hard* to roast coffee dark. It's like, "our coffee is premium, because we have perfected the secret techniques of burning coffee to oblivion."

I'm going to write an article on this systemd-nspawn setup I made for persistent, isolated development environments. Now, I just need to create a website to write the blog post on...

I've been wanting to run an isolated dev environment for work on my home computer (linux) that is similar to what I'd get with FreeBSD jails or a Solaris/Illumos zones. I discovered systemd-nspawn, and while it's a little more work to set up, it is working great! I get a complete dev system w/o a VM

13YO gets to suggest some songs for an upcoming school event playlist, and she asked for some song suggestions. You'd better believe we listened to Beck, Cake, and the Flaming Lips!
