Imagine you time travel back to 1847 and you find the left response to industrialization is a) machines will never be as good as human weavers or b) we need to copyright loom patterns or c) it’s a speculative bubble. You’d say “Y’all. Not helping. What you need is obviously a labor movement.”

That is about it. The PMC thinks they’re entrepreneurs with their own (intellectual) capital—so what they need is not a union, but merely laws to prevent others from stealing their ideas.

I mean, that's not too far off the actuality. The main reaction of weavers was that the mills were making cheap slop knockoffs and enriching themselves off of weavers' hard-developed styles. Seeking to destroy rather than sieze the means of production was wrong, folly, and failed.

Except, historical revisionism asidr, they absolutely were. And were not just violent against property - there were literal shootings. Just... last year I think - they found a "panic room" in an old mill built during the Luddite era, to hide in during attacks.

Not the main point, but I think copyrighting patterns was already there when the frame breakers kicked off. At least for print patterns (not quite the same, perhaps) in the UK, the copyright got extended from a few months to a bunch of years as the C19 progressed. Not really a left thing, I'd guess.

This has been confusing me since I joined Bluesky. The rational behavior would at the very least be to have some sort of game plan in case beliefs a and c prove to be false, and assign a minimum of credence to what domain experts are predicting.

It's especially perplexing when this comes from the left. Historically, socialism has been about reducing the burden of labour (shorter work week, more vacation, etc.). The prospect for accomplishing that has never been greater than it is now.

You got an AI that does anything useful? Like manufacturing, domestic labor? Stocking shelves? Anything that replaces important human labor so people have more freedom to make art and such? Cause all I see people pushing right now are slop excreters and surveillance.

I'm guessing that you're asserting that based on your own experience and knowledge. Current AI systems are not yet *general* artificial intelligence, but they absolutely do things people want done, and the technology improves at an incredible rate, whether we like it or not.

Yep. If this was an ordinary case of automation—not labeled “AI”—people would accept that it’s happening and move on to discuss effects, policy responses, etc. The “AI” label makes people feel the value of their sentience is undermined, which triggers denial, which prevents a pragmatic response.

This post has made me question when was America founded with Google and Bing both giving two completely different answers. The USA gov site says July 4, 1776 but bing says "may 12, 1784". I wish I was joking tbh

Humanity has long been plagued by those who can't differentiate between reality and desire. They don't *want* technology to break new thresholds, and so to them it *can't* happen. Until it does, and then they move to the next "impossible" goalpost.

Part of why it didn't turn out that way is that it turns out people prefer working 2025 hours with a 2025 middle class standard of living over working 10 hours a week with an 1880 middle class standard of living. Go figure

To be fair, part of the issue is that a labor movement is happening. It is just focused more on system justification based concerns like increasing copyright strictness than actually helping workers themselves.

Normal labor movements won't work. You can't just end capitalism. It seems the only solution with a chance of working is a corp owned by people with rules in place to avoid control capture. But it can't be built fast enough. It's impossible. And we can see it'll likely fail just looking at our

democracy. I don't see a way out. The best I've come up with is let corps destroy themselves by making themselves obsolete because people can no longer afford their services. Bring everything local. Use ai to make every person or small group of people a business. But that leads to the problems
