I was on a long-haul flight on a 787 where the captain had control of the dimming of the windows and therefor I was not permitted to see out of the window all night. If the sun is low and on my side, I will show restraint, but I'm an open window flyer.

I always get a window seat and gaze out the window. I've seen amazing sights from the air: the Rocky Mountains in the USA and Canada, Greenland and Iceland, and the Northern Lights among them.

Agree for domestic flights. For the long haul, transoceanic flights, though, leaving shades up when everyone is wanting to sleep is just rude.

I got a good picture of an offshore wind farm recently. Closing the shades during the day seems to be a recent trend and I don’t understand it

I just returned home after a cross country trip. In both directions, I sat next to someone who closed the shades. Imagine flying into Seattle on a perfect day, over the snow covered Cascades, views of Puget Sound and the Olympics. And Rainier! And having no interests in the views out the windows.

My partner prefers to sit in the window seat AND he always closes the shade unless instructed to open it by crew (EU carriers are the ones we've experienced that request from the most.) I would otherwise always have it open to see what's going on out there!
