It's an enticing story. Empire and subjugation as the natural order. Nothing you can do about it. Know your place. Keep your head down and your nose clean. But so is fighting for freedom. Never giving up, despite the odds. Finding joy in friendship and common cause. Doing what is right. Caring.

Either way, it’s ordinary people who suffer, starve, and die for the dreams of idiot rulers, kings, and tsars.

The point is that we had an equilibrium that benefited the US and humanity in a liberal free trade order allowing for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Now we're back to the worst impulses of power drunk authoritarians.
