As my moniker says, I’m a US citizen living in Canada as a permanent resident. But, as I’m also a US military veteran, since I’ve moved here, I’ve travelled an hour or so monthly, to cross over to a VA clinic for ongoing treatment of various medical conditions. No more.

Having served as an advocate/ombudsman in a state department of corrections, I will tell you that most people who work in jails and prisons and detention centers think nothing of people languishing behind bars needlessly as days tick away. Callousness infects all staff, including healthcare staff.

Being paid to look the other way and reserve compassion makes it a bit easier. No way those guards are even talking to the detainees to learn about their stories. Probably the worst day was first day at work and it gets easier each following pay day.

I think a key point too is that WE ARE PAYING FOR THIS. These for-profit prisons built a bureaucratic hellhole to disappear because the longer they’re held, the more taxpayer money they get. Even if you don’t care about the sickening cruelty, at least care that it’s literally taking money from you.

It is stunning that some random person can spark this chain of events just by thinking things look “shady.” No due process, no representation. Everything we have been taught about Americans being the “good guys” is a lie.

Check the backgrounds of these two private businesses, CoreCivic and Geo Group that act as detention guards for ICE. Each had earned several hundred millions dollar contracts from ICE. Who are their major shareholders and how these contracts are awarded? Did DOGE get a share?

It's not, though. She tried to skirt the visa system by entering through Mexico. The millions of asylum seeking migrants get this treatment daily. Tell the stories of the illegally held migrants, not some privileged white lady from Canada who didn't believe the rules applied the same way to her.

Neither she nor the women she met in detention deserved to be treated in the way they were. I agree that the stories of the other migrants are much more heart-wrenching than hers; but the treatment is cruel barbarism. Chains, fluorescent lights, cold cells, pat-downs, separation from children. Awful

This is a bit longer read, but you need to read it in its entirety. For this person (or any person) to be treated this way and without due process (by no stretch of the imagination are they "enemy combatants" plus we are not at war). I, as an American who has not drunk the Kool Aid, feel so ashamed.

I’m so ashamed of my country for treating any human being this way. I am so sorry! Thank you for your story. I’m sharing it and hoping others will wake up to what our government is doing and how wrong this is. Also read the story about Mervin Yamarte who was “deported” to El Salvador.

Just like American icon Pres. Wilson did to mothers who protested entry into WW1 meat grinders. Woodrow was 10 times the oversexed groper Trump is. Woody had them dragged from their homes, threw them in cold cells where they died. Like Trump, fired gov't black workers & gutted civil service. Routine

Stop calling it Kidnapping!!! It's RENDITIONING!!!!!! There's a difference. Kidnapping is usually for money or retaliation by individuals. RENDITIONING is when Governments disappear people that they find undesirable. Call it what it is!!!!!🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

I am only one 70 yr old American woman who wants to express from the bottom of my heart & soul ? My deepest sorrow for your suffering at the hands of my deranged government. We are fighting like Hell to change these obcenities. Know I keep you close.

Everything that trump and holman and their Nazi brigade are doing to the innocent people will come full circle and it will… will be nasty…you will not be in office forever…sad thing people notice…

Just read the interview. THAT WAS INSANE! These private, for profit prison/jail/detaining systems are 100% UNCONSTITUTIONAL!! They completely have ZERO oversight, they have ZERO accountability to the treatment of ANY of the detainees, & profit in MILLIONS of dollars in human suffering. This is DOGE

Honestly longer. If you follow back various roots of GEO Group as an example, some acquired businesses started private prisons as far back as the early 80s at the state and federal level. US Immigration was the first fed agency to use them.

I just can’t believe it. All of it - the utter disregard, and refusal to see someone as a person. I’m a History teacher and surely, surely people know better. We have seen this before and know how it can end. Why are you still doing it?!

The "grift" here is that US taxpayers money is going to for-profit jails... where they throw 'non-criminals' to get $ per head. Wouldn't you rather your tax dollars pay for actual criminals to be jailed? Either you didn't read the story or you don't know what "grift" means.

So they put an influencing grifter in prison for quotas? Thats a bigger story than what really happened. Likely a paperwork error led to a brief incarceration and questioning which has been turned into a Netflix series. Be better. The left is infiltrated by grifting establishment cunts.

The prison nurse, who took a job neglecting medical needs and covering up abuse, babbling about her god to ease her conscience because this one didn't look like an acceptable target for bigotry is painted in a way that makes me deeply uncomfortable here.

She was entering through the US / Mexico border and Mexico now has a policy where non Mexican citizens can’t be returned to Mexico. This means that ICE has to detain them until transport to their home country is arranged. If they fight the deportation, they are detained longer. She was returned home

theyre training the deportation workers to get used to dehumanizing people so that when they send pelosi and and other americans that speak against turmp through the camps no one will speak against it.

From Canada’s point of view this is a direct attack on a Canadian. You take care of your own country, we’re busy fighting the annexation threat and the daily assaults on Canada. BTW, we aren’t suppressing the coverage of your vile and despicable government in Canada. We know all about your SS troups

It sounds like they applied the law fairly. Think of what leftists would have said had they overlooked her expired temporary work visa and allowed her entry to the US from Mexico. It’s a good thing that ICE has followed the procedures and treated her fairly

This is a Canadian citizen and we have to read her story on The Guardian? I love The Guardian, but why are Canadian media not first up with this? Chicken-shit editors afraid of annoying the nasty neighbours? God help us all.

Private prisons and the profit motive need more bodies to put in them. Detaining foreigners is one money maker. In the USA we had the "Cash for Kids" scandal where a judge who had an interest in the private prison packed off juveniles to fill it and profit from it. Conflict of interest? No longer

The Guardian does not have pay walls. They ask you to donate, but you can just close the request and read at your will. But, truthfully, it is a one of the best publications out there if you want truth. So, I donate, but you do not have to in order to read their articles.

I was able to access the Guardian through its website and other social media outlets, it was just through BlueSky I was having the issue. Thanks for the helpful info about the paywall. I wouldn’t have checked anywhere else under that assumption.

No limit. I mean I have been reading The Guardian for years and never had a limit. I just donated for the first time a few weeks ago, since I have dropped WaPo, and stopped watching or listening to any mainstream media news.

Maybe now we can start acting like human being’s and not Rabid dog’s looking for anything they can chew on. I’m so sorry you had to experience such inhumanity but you have brought Light to this matter and now Canada need’s to arrest the TRump’s & Musk for interfering with your country’s affair’s.

Is is the current American administration's fault. Good Americans apologize for the crazies who are killing our once wonderful country. 😓 So glad you were able to get back to Canada ❤️

Been happening for years and years, not months. Also, falling into the trap of authoritarianism can happen in any country, unfortunately. Similar to how almost anyone can become vulnerable to a cult, even when they are adamant that it couldn’t happen to them or “couldn’t happen here.”

It has NEVER been as bad as this in my entire life. AND while it CAN happen in any country, you don't have to look too far to see that people around the World are fighting back & rejecting fascism. South Korea, Syria, Hungary, etc. have ALL had major revolts. The US seems to have given up!

Oh it's been more than a couple of months. People have been warning about this since Regan and Bush the first. But I fully understand if you don't want to come here. It's going to be a bit rough for a while.

THIS is the worst decline I've ever seen. There is an INSANE Madman at the Helm whose kink truly seems to be CRUELTY & then combined with his grotesque greed & lust for power is a recipe for disaster. He has ensured that ALL LONG time ALLIED Nations have lost trust & respect for the US.

Unfortunately most of the people detained don’t have the resources that this beautiful, wealthy, well-connected, white woman has. I’m grateful for her, though, because through her, we are getting a glimpse into these horrible prisons and this corrupt system.

We kind of got that message a while back. Apart from the dangers of flying into US air space now under the control, or lack of it, of Trump’s lunatics, there is the possibility of being arrested for thought crime or maybe just speaking out of turn to a stranger. Nazi Germany vibes.

People are paying attention and questioning travel to the US. This is going to have a huge impact on the hospitality economy! #trumpcession bsky.app/profile/ecke...

With everything happening in the US right now, how safe are scientific conferences for foreign participants in the US? I think this is something we have to discuss as a scientific community. I am hesitating to register for US meetings due to the unpredictable situation. Others who feel the same?
