EA just killed Bioware and the next Mass Effect, in development since at least six years. "Around 50 staff had been working on a new Mass Effect that is now canceled." This period is a never-ending nightmare.

BREAKING: Electronic Arts is cutting 400 jobs and shutting down BioWare, the legendary development studio behind Dragon Age and Mass Effect. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

β€œOver the past several months, we’ve taken a hard look at our business” and will cut some projects, including the next Mass Effect game, which was in early development at BioWare." Wait, what? Early development? I started my coverage on the next Mass Effect on November 7, 2020. So it was rebooted?

Mass Effect 5 "A core team at BioWare is developing the next Mass Effect game under the leadership of veterans from the original trilogy, including Mike Gamble, Preston Watamaniuk, Derek Watts, Parrish Ley (...) Given this stage of development, we don’t require support from the full studio."

They killed the studio that gave me some of the most beautiful moments in sci-fi video games: Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect series. I can't thank those who worked on these games over the years enough.

"At BioWare, story is one of the primary elements and our characters are one of the primary means we have for telling those stories. We work on story first, and keep refining it until we’re happy with it. But story impacts every other creative team."

"We’re in constant communication with the cinematics, art and voice over team. Without that communication, things would fall apart quickly. (...) Each character in Mass Effect represents thousands of hours of effort spread across dozens of people."

Going to give my own takeaway on the demise of Bioware, which still makes me very sad. The TLDR: Bioware was not killed suddenly by a private equity acquisition. It was slowly strangled by idiots who didn't understand what made Bioware great - some at EA but also some inside of Bioware leadership

"We were making something special: a level of autonomy and choice that no other game has been able to match. We saw what Larian and CD Projekt were bringing to the table with their latest offerings, and started down a path to bring Mass Effect to the next level while remaining true to the Trilogy."

I have a weird announcement. On and off for the last five years, as a contract writer, and as a senior writer on staff, I've been hoping to be allowed to say where I worked. Today I finally got the green light: I've been working on the next Mass Effect. 1/6

Pouring one out for Bioware this morning, and thinking of their rise and fall across such a long period. It's oddly close to home, for someone who never worked there, and only in an adjoining industry. But I did get to see behind the curtain once, and it stuck with me.

Meh....the founders made out like bandits with the corporate buyout, the artists/writers who made the classics were canned. Bioware has been a zombie company for a long time. If you want good games these days, gotta look at indie-studios. 🀫
