EA just killed Bioware and the next Mass Effect, in development since at least six years. "Around 50 staff had been working on a new Mass Effect that is now canceled." This period is a never-ending nightmare.

“Over the past several months, we’ve taken a hard look at our business” and will cut some projects, including the next Mass Effect game, which was in early development at BioWare." Wait, what? Early development? I started my coverage on the next Mass Effect on November 7, 2020. So it was rebooted?

Mass Effect 5 "A core team at BioWare is developing the next Mass Effect game under the leadership of veterans from the original trilogy, including Mike Gamble, Preston Watamaniuk, Derek Watts, Parrish Ley (...) Given this stage of development, we don’t require support from the full studio."

They killed the studio that gave me some of the most beautiful moments in sci-fi video games: Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect series. I can't thank those who worked on these games over the years enough.

Again, the next Mass Effect game was announced in November 2020, so how can it still be in early development? If anyone knows, my email is in my profile and my DMs are open. 🖖

"At BioWare, story is one of the primary elements and our characters are one of the primary means we have for telling those stories. We work on story first, and keep refining it until we’re happy with it. But story impacts every other creative team."

I'm a semi-solo gamedev and I'll just say that it's ugly fucking work sometimes. We're coming close to releasing a game I've been working on for 3 years and if I could get another 3 years to work on it I would.

I don't know specifics, but I do know how a game can limp along like that: an indecisive executive team sending them back to the drawing board over and over again without greenlighting full production. Happens more often than you'd think.

Gaming will have to re-invent itself from the ashes. I don't think it's going to 'come back' from this. There will be nothing left. It will take small, scrappy, indie studios to make good games with heart and soul. The problem is that slopmasters are cloning indie games right and left.

The main problem when the next generation versions of what used to be Id and Apogee finally rise up from the ruins, all the IPs we love will be locked up behind the legal vaults of the game industry vultures. Just like Duke Nukem.

As a game developer of 30 years, I’ve never experienced a more brutal time for our industry. Nothing is sacred, there are no safe harbors, and financial success does not ensure your continued employment. Every project is a series of miracles, now it will be a miracle if anyone is left standing
