EA just killed Bioware and the next Mass Effect, in development since at least six years. "Around 50 staff had been working on a new Mass Effect that is now canceled." This period is a never-ending nightmare.

Totally sucks. If I were a billionaire I’d do what I could to resurrect it, even burn money doing it just to keep it going and keep that team alive. Thats why I’m not a billionaire.

I'll miss the brand, but they brought it on themselves to a series of bad decisions. Anthem, Mass Effect Andromeda, and Dragon Age The Veil guard. Goodbye BioWare, I hope you actually talented people who work there find better jobs

Though, it is still sad that any opertunity for Mass Effect is gone... But also not much of a surprise given who purchased them.

Yup, it's baffling near a decade later people still don't get it. Bioware Montreal was basically funded to make over Mass Effect after 3, and then got folded into Motive after the poor reactions to the game. We'd have had a sequel long ago otherwise.

“Over the past several months, we’ve taken a hard look at our business” and will cut some projects, including the next Mass Effect game, which was in early development at BioWare." Wait, what? Early development? I started my coverage on the next Mass Effect on November 7, 2020. So it was rebooted?

Mass Effect 5 "A core team at BioWare is developing the next Mass Effect game under the leadership of veterans from the original trilogy, including Mike Gamble, Preston Watamaniuk, Derek Watts, Parrish Ley (...) Given this stage of development, we don’t require support from the full studio."

They killed the studio that gave me some of the most beautiful moments in sci-fi video games: Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect series. I can't thank those who worked on these games over the years enough.

As a game developer of 30 years, I’ve never experienced a more brutal time for our industry. Nothing is sacred, there are no safe harbors, and financial success does not ensure your continued employment. Every project is a series of miracles, now it will be a miracle if anyone is left standing

I think it's sort of a Final Fantasy Versus XIII situation, with a game announced and esssentially never having a full team working on it and was just in "early devs" for years with just a small crew prototyping.

Let's be honest. Probably.

It's tempting to say of EA and BioWare that at least they should have released the Mass Effect game they were working on, sunk costs and so on. But given the way production on Andromeda and Veilguard went, you have to consider that there's a very real chance they were nowhere.

EA's new owner is a government that has the death penalty for gay people. I don't think this was a business decision.

Another great studio gone. EA have been a driving force in shuttering great studios for decades. Remember Psygnosis? AAA gaming is in decline. Too much money involved to take risks or do anything new. There is no art in the business and the pressure drives talent out of the industry.

I can't say this come as a surprise considering Bioware was running as a skeleton crew after the post Veilguard layoffs and EA had just sold to the Saudis and Jared Kushner. But this is still heartbreaking this is like Square Enix going away.

Honestly makes me glad my favorite game series is made by Egosoft who are too small to be corporate but established and solid enough that theyre still putting out great stuff

EA don't need ask those messy people with their messy people problems. All their games can be made faster and better by AI. Don't like it? Apparently you can go fuck yourself. Or you buy games from industry developers who still code the old fashioned way, and include good stories.

Like Konami, they'll run for a long time on cashgrab games and endless remakes of their loved IP despite having killed the studios who made them

Unfortunately ever since the Saudi buy-out the writing has been on the wall. EA is absolutely loaded with debt and it's going to be all about squeezing money out of the live service games.
